I realise that what I'm going to say is controversial. But I saw on the news yesterday about the cost to the NHS of giving patients lifelong medication for their obesity.
Sorry, I think Dr's should be being more proactive about people getting the weight off by diet and exercise.
Think this situation has become so bad due to political correctness, people being afraid of raising the issue of weight.
Maybe people should be having to meet weight targets prior to being referred for their operations on the NHS.
Smoking has been made into an anti-social habit over the years because there has been a big anti smoking campaign.

doodlebug yes I think people with acne are given advice one grandaughter recently had an outbreak due to hormone imbalance and she was given a lot of advice and tips from her GP of things to do to help herself as well as a short term prescription. Happily she was keen to work with the advice and its now completely under control and she knows what to do if it occurs again
I think these injections could be a good short term help for very obese people if used in conjunction with GP or nurses advice and follow ups but to diagnose yourself and pay at a pharmacy I think is dangerous
My very overweight friend used them under doctors supervision but lost no noticeable weight and gave up

I was not a fat child, neither were either of my parents, nor were my children or my husband.
We all ate the same food, I was fit and a healthy weight until after the birth of my last child, 22 years ago. I cooked mainly from scratch, worked full time, exercised and was pretty much ok healthwise.
I contracted an awful hospital infection, when staying on the children’s ward when my son was admitted at a few days old to treat jaundice.
Various meds led to weight gain, the nature of my new conditions led to not being able to exercise anywhere near enough. Weight gain led to depression and across 22 years the weight just seemed to pile on, we’ve always eaten lots of fruit and veg, I make homemade soups.
I was then diagnosed as pre-diabetic a couple of years ago and last year prescribed Ozempic to help combat this.
The side effects were ghastly, I’m using it on and off, trying to exercise more, following a restricted diet and let me assure anyone reading this the weight doesn’t just drop off, whilst one sits watching TV and stuffing buns!
It’s quite sad that many are so judgmental about those who are overweight or obese. It’s easier I suppose to blame individuals than the food environment which we now live in, which is vastly changed since many of us grew up. There are about 10 or 11 major international food companies which dominate the market. Their job is to produce a vast choice of tasty food, cheaply and as profitably as possible.
Pizzas for example weren’t a regular meal choice when I was a child. Just think about what this food is and how addictive some of the unhealthy ingredients are, and how addictive, for example sugar can be.
Can it be that the food industry is poisoning us?

There is a piece in the DM about how many people have had to go to hospitals due to bad side effects from these jabs.
That doesn’t help the NHS queues.

Did you watch the Panorama documentary on the subject. The patients featured all admitted that they are very greedy with food and just can't, or won't, stop. They will put all the weight back on if they don't, won't or can't change their attitude to food.
I've just watched the programme and that's not the message I got.

Absolutely and private clinics have popped up all over the place too.
Perhaps, as others have suggested, our NHS should stop treating “fatties”, like me, and anyone who smokes, drinks, addicts of any kind, those who play dangerous sports and anyone who has “self inflicted” (for example septic or infected tattoos, I am NOT referring to who who self-harm or attempt suicide)
That should cut waiting lists and make undertakers rich!
I too have an underactive thyroid which definitely causes weight gain.
I decided last October to start counting calories. I bought this book, photo to follow, which was a game changer for me. It is 100 percent photos of food in different quantities. I have been losing weight very slowly, but I just decided I wouldn’t give up.
I only felt hungry for the first week.
In addition my friend lent me a very useful book called ‘The 8 week blood sugar diet’. Which shows easy recipes of meals that I can cook which will help my weight loss. I dislike cooking so this is a good book for me as all the recipes are easy and look delicious.
I know my method is not for everyone but I can now get into clothes that were destined for the charity shop.
I have only told one person I am on a diet/new way of eating and of course all of you GN members.
Finally, if you fancy joining me I am on the Pears thread. Lots of encouragement and help from the other GN members.
I would love to know to what extent the attitude to obesity has been influenced by lobbying from the diet industry. It is deeply ironic to hear people opining about weight-loss jabs not being a permanent solution when the whole business model for the likes of Slimming World and Weight Watchers relies on the fact that as soon as people stop eating their products and counting Syns or points they gain weight again.
Many people are on 'yo-yo' diets all their lives, so 'simply' eating in a regimented manner doesn't work either. The same applies to those who swap real food for a 'healthy shake', or get their food delivered in pre-counted boxes at huge expense. As soon as they return to normal eating the weight goes back on, so they go back to their classes and subscriptions. That is somehow acceptable, though🤔
Some people are blessed with a metabolism that lets them eat more or less what they like (within limits) and not gain weight. I used to be one of them. It's easy to assume that that is because of virtue, and that fatties who don't have that metabolism must be troughing chips and ice cream at every meal. Some might, but so might some skinny minnies.

That book has been my food "bible" for years. I can endorse it whether people are looking to count calories or for T2 diabetics looking to count carbs.

If you want to loose weight you will Its all about Will power just don’t over eat Smaller portions more fruit veg You have to shrink your stomach You have to feel hungry Make soups with veg only one slice of bread You can have roast diners just be sensible and nice food but not big puddings eat a piece of fruit and a square of chocolate It’s possible if you want to loose weight

in supermarket recently full of to many carbs and wrong foods in bigger peoples baskets All to sad No will power If you want to loose you will It’s hard …..to easy these days to reward your self if you feel sad with something tasty !!!Thank you so much! If only I’d realised. Where did you qualify as a dietitian? I could go there for help. Or do you give lessons in willpower at all? I could trade you for ones in grammar, since we are passing on unnecessary and potentially hurtful advice.
It’s all about paying attention at school and just sticking to the rules. All you need is a dictionary and a book about the rules of the English language. Easy.

As one of the 'some people', I agree that many don't want to hear the truth, as it means their halos slip a bit.
I don't wish ill health on anyone, but if you developed an underactive thyroid and a respiratory condition that meant you couldn't exercise you might not be so insufferably self-righteous.

Weight gain is a very complex subject. Let's face it very few people actually want to be overweight Bringing out the 'lazy and greedy' judgemental label doesn't address the issue and I expect is said by those who don't struggle with overeating and weight gain.
Some people gain weight with some medications. Studies have shown that some peoples bodies don't have the 'enough food' gene and so they don't ever feel full. You could call it an illness. Then it's a known fact that many women who have been abused both in childhood and currently in relationships use food as a coping mechanism. You can call that an emotional/ psychological issue. There are also people who don't know how to cook healthy food or are too poor to afford it so they end up eating junk food which is full of fat and starch. Also there are endless adverts for fast food online. These images send messages to our brains that we are hungry.
Food can be an addiction and like all addicts they are powerless over the consumption of their substance. If you are a drinker, gambler, drug addict you can be that and go unnoticed. Sadly for a food addict it's there for all to see... so much shame and shaming attached to it!
I dont think these injections really are the answer and many will gain weight again once they stop, as the core overeating issue hasn't been addressed. The real solution would cost the NHS millions in therapy and (preventative) education and even then it is a difficult thing to resolve.
If you are one of the people who have none of these issues please have compassion for the people who are obese. You don't know what they have been through or are going through today. I'm pretty sure if you got to talk to them in depth you would find unhappiness and deeper difficult issues that have never been addressed.

Having just watched the panorama program the sight of Sharon Osbourne (😳) and the fact that some of the side-effects are nausea and vomiting would be enough to put me off….
So I will just keep going to the gym (which I have recently started again)and watching what I eat because as I’ve said before when I’m eating rubbish, it’s not because I’m hungry it’s because I just fancy it….

I had a very skinny friend, prior to me having my children, so I was “normal”. She tried absolutely everything to out on weight, literally eating steamed puddings, pasta, protein rich food and even drinking stout. She visited her GP who told her she was “blessed” with a fast metabolism

Losing weight is not easy. It's hard. You have to be determined.
When my blood sugar started creeping up I decided to give up added sugar. I'm a decisive person when it comes to my health so I went cold turkey. I gave up chocolate, sweets, cakes, biscuits, pastries etc. However, I didn't go hungry! I still ate bread, pasta, rice and had a glass of wine. I lost a stone in weight within a few weeks!
Here are some suggestions if you are determined:
1. Never shop for food when you are hungry. You will crave a quick fix and buy something it would be better to avoid. Eat a healthy, filling meal before you go shopping for food.
2. Don't go down the chocolate, sweets, cakes, biscuits, pastries or fizzy drinks aisles in the supermarket. Tell yourself NO! and move on past.
3. Avoid 'friends' who will try to sabotage your efforts with unhelpful comments e.g. "Come on! One biscuit won't hurt you!" They only do it to make themselves feel better about eating sugary stuff. Be strong!
4. Read the labels on foods to wean yourself off sugar. Look only at the values per 100g for carbohydrates and sugars so you can make informed comparisons. For example: jumbo oats are approximately 60% carbs but only 1% sugars. Oats are good! Marmalade is 62% carbs but all 62% is sugars! Jam and marmalade not good! Tagliatelle pasta is approximately 33% carbs but only 1.5% sugars. Pasta is good! Heinz baked beans per 100g are 11.7g carbs of which sugars 4.7g. One slice of Sainsbury's wholemeal sourdough bloomer has only 1g of sugars. Baked beans on toast are good! Nature Valley Oats and Honey crunchy bars 27% sugars. Not good! I
5. Don't go "low fat". Foods promoted as low fat are often ultra processed and have added sugar instead. Full fat dairy is good e.g. Authentic Greek yogurt. Add fruit if you wish.
Butter your toast (but don't go mad!) Eat nuts and seeds. I confess I'm obsessed with nuts and seeds!
See what I mean? Educate yourself about food!
Both of my sisters and I each have an underactive thyroid. Our mother did too. It tends to run in families. We are all on thyroxine medication. None of us is overweight.
Good luck! It can be a hard slog but you can do it if you are determined!
Finally (I promise) Ask yourself, "Do I want this doughnut more than I want the health benefits of giving up sugar?" If your answer is yes, buy the doughnut, take it home, make a cuppa and enjoy. You've made your decision.
