Scan on kidneys, ureter and bladder

MrA has just had a series of scans on bladder, liver, kidneys, lungs and the results are sent to the consultant who organised the scan. The people doing the scans are not necessarily the people who know how to analyse the scan.

It may be different if it's private and the consultant is on site of course.

Yes I had one for kidney stones and the operator spotted a few stones but I had to wait to see the consultant for the results .

I had one a few years ago when I went to A&E, turned out to be a kidney stone, I had a CT scan with contrast dye which showed up kidneys, bladder etc. whilst I was lying on the scanner I’m sure they already knew what I had wrong with me by my symptoms so it was just to confirm it.
Totally painless although it makes you feel that you need to pee, but you don’t.
Had another one recently for my lung problem, exactly the same procedure. No fasting or anything.

I had this type of scan on NHS - didn’t get results (all ok!) for about a week

Is it an ultrasound? If so you have to drink a good pint of water so take a bottle with you. Painless, but they may do a vaginal scan with a probe, now I have had a couple, the first one was uncomfortable but the others have been ok. Found thickening of my womb.

You can ask for a written report to come to you.

I had one recently and the person doing it said she did not see anything to worry about . When I spoke to my GP she was right.

My DH had one in October he got the results last week ! I hope you don’t have to wait as long as us.

I think if you have a problem you are told pretty smartish the longer they leave telling you, the more likely that there isnt a problem.

Results usually come via your consultant after having been seen and reported by a radiologist, who isn’t the person taking the pictures. It’s an x-ray not an ultrasound and doesn’t include a vaginal scan.

My DD is a radiographer and does scans, which are then passed to a radiologist or reporting radiographer to review and report to the consultant. She gets annoyed when the a GP surgery tells patients it can take 2 weeks for your Gp to receive the report as the reports are uploaded to the health board at system as soon as the reports have been submitted and everyone with access can see the reports. So in effect your consultant or Gp should be able to review the reports very quickly.

I had an ultrasound on my bladder and was told straight afterwards, which I was grateful for. All ok.

It really does depend on true results and the person doing the scan. It could be a Doctor or a sonographer. Usually a comparison to previous scans needs to be made but sometimes you may be given the results immediately

Yes I had all those things done at Guy's Hospital some years ago at what the consultant I saw described as a 'one-stop waterworks clinic'. I was told to expect to be there for a good portion of the day. The process began with a urine test which I had to do in the loo and then pass through a tiny sliding door cupboard after which it was analysed immediately. Scans followed, somebody came round with a retail trolley selling food and beverage and another person took up residence playing classical music on a violin. It was a very thorough and calming experience and I saw two consultants who gave me all the results before I left. In fact my mystery and worrying pain had been caused by an over-zealous osteopath who had actually and unintentionally moved one of my kidneys while trying to deal with some back ache resulting in excrutiating kidney pain resembling a stone. I don't spend much time near osteopaths now.

I have recently had two CT scans with contrast.If this is what you are having,I had a further appointment with the consultant a week later.At that appointment a further scan was arranged for the next day 15/1 and I have an appointment to discuss the results on Tuesday 21/1.NHS and very efficient.

I have chronic kidney disease and have had loads of scans…scans all painless. BUT, here in Wales, no results are given on the spot. They took about 6 weeks to come back last time.
The only time I’ve ever been given partial results, but told the full results will be sent to the consultant who will be in touch later, was after having Ultrasounds or X rays. Never with Scans.

My DH had these CT scans last Tuesday; he was told results would be sent to GP, hopefully within a week but may take up to three weeks. If he hasn't heard anything within a month to check with GP

I have had scans on various bits of me over my 73 years and the timing of results has varied, from instant if the radiographer is qualified to pass a comment, to up to a month later if nothing serious has been found, and all intervals in between depending on whether in hospital or an out-patient. So I don't think you can say how soon you will get the results, but in my experience anything serious is communicated asap.

I've not had that sort of scan, but did work for the NHS for over 30 years. I doubt very much you would be told the results until your consultant had seen them, who would then send a letter to your GP who would then contact you.
