Excellent NHS experience but...

We are going to Sri Lanka on holiday. On reading about it, I discovered that we might need various injections. I googled travel vaccines and found that there was a specific clinic for this at a local hospital. Having phoned and made an appointment to suit us, we were sent forms to complete prior to this.
On arrival we were seen on time by an excellent and very well informed specialist nurse. She took us through a full range of precautions we'd need as well as our vaccine history. She then talked us through all the pros and cons of the potential vaccines we might need. Eventually, we had the triple diphtheria, tetanus and polio vaccination and one for Hepatitis A.
We were not rushed and she was extremely kind and helpful. We expected to pay but were told it was an NHS provision.
Very helpful for us but it got me thinking that surely this could be outsourced like sight and hearing testing now is. Foreign holidays are a luxury so we really felt guilty taking up NHS time and resources.

I’m sure you could have sourced this privately? Perhaps one day your wish to pay for these types of medical interventions will become a realisation. Might not be too far away.No need then to feel guilty about it.

Good to read the first positive part of the post though.

There are private vaccine clinics in town but the NHS ones came up first when I was Googling. I thought I'd rather pay NHS than some private place.

I get your thinking but if people had to pay then they wouldn’t do it (I don’t mean you). You only have to look at the appeals for money for thise who haven’t bothered with holiday insurance to see that,

They’d come back with diseases that would cost even more for the NHS to treat. I guess ultimately it’s a saving for the NHS.

I’m sure if anyone can afford to go on exotic holidays, they can afford to pay for the necessary injections.

My thinking too crazyH. We were all set to pay.

As someone said, the vaccinations for diseases which potentially cause the greatest risk, if brought back to the UK, are free. Others you pay for. All on the NHS website.
