Tummy bug (gastro-enteritis)

Bought a green salad from the food section of one of our very popular stores. Had it about 4pm, had a small portion of treacle slice, from the same place, had it with some single cream from the fridge, can’t tell you which part of this meal has caused this bug - been to the loo many times (loose ) - and continuous tummy pain. Burping too. Can’t sleep, so I thought there will be some light-sleepers on here who wil be able to name the culprit. This is just for fun, as it’s a distraction for me, while I wait for the next ‘call’ which will be anytime now ……

Thanks HelterSkelter - I think I remember doing one.

A FIT test is like the one you get in the post every few years. It looks for microscopic spots of blood in the pooh so it's the next step test for investigating your current problem. The result comes through quite quickly. Be patient and try not to worry and try to stay calm. Easier said than done I know.

Come to think of it, I don’t think she said everything was fine - I am so stressed and confused. I think she said I can’t see anything - meaning she can’t see haemorrhoids??? Why has she ordered a FIT test kit. I won’t be sleeping well tonight either. So sorry to bother you. I will double my dose of Zopiclone. If anyone knows about FIT test, please enlighten me

I always think the two supermarket items hat can cause tummy problems are bags of salad ( although I thought that had improved) and bean sprouts ( always cook packets of stir fry very thoroughly). I was staying at my daughter’s last week and started to eat some Brie that was in the fridge wrapped in foil. Given that she’s as bad s me at not throwing food out when it’s past it’s best after one mouthful I decided to put it back in the fridge ( just in case any medics might need to check exactly what bacteria had poisoned me). Seem to have got away with it; phew.

crazyH

The Doctor felt around my stomach and examined my nether regions and said everything was fine. She is going to order a FIT pack (stool sample kit), which I will have to return in the envelope provided.
Thanks everyone - have a lovely week xx

That sounds very reassuring - you should be able to sleep better tonight.

She said the food poisoning could have irritated the haemorrhoids and caused the bleeding. Be careful of green salads !!

Got an appointment for this afternoon between 2-4pm

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 22-Feb-25 12:24:55

Oh crazyH I feel for you. My health anxiety would be through the roof as well this weekend. I expect it’s bleeding from those haemorrhoids but you won’t settle mentally until you’ve been reassured (hopefully) by your GP.

Oh goodness CrazyH I'm here to join the others in saying that you need to be seen earlier rather than later. Is there anywhere locally you can visit?
Clearly, this isn't simple food poisoning, or the norovirus, which I had a couple of weeks ago. It was 24 miserable hours on the loo, and a few days recently feeling rather feeble, but it's all resolved now - as yours should be : please seek some medical advice.
Good luck.

Aldom Sat 22-Feb-25 12:02:03

CrazyH this has gone on a long time. Rather than just wait until Monday for a GP appointment, would you consider ringing 111?
They will advise you and possibly even facilitate an appointment with a doctor, if they consider it necessary.
All best wishes.

0ops - I think I will take a sample. Thanks

Oopsadaisy1 Sat 22-Feb-25 11:54:13

CrazyH it might be a good idea to take a sample in with you so that they can test for food poisoning.

Sorry to read this but you are right to go see your GP. I am sure your son will understand you are not well.
Hope it gets sorted for you soon.

After couple of good days , it’s back again. Bloody diarrhoea- son and daughter-in-law are staying over with me tonight. I will definitely see the GP on Monday - meanwhile my anxiety levels are through the roof - can’t sleep - so sorry to bother you

keepingquiet Mon 17-Feb-25 20:11:54

I've had both norovirus and food poisoning a few times so you have my sympathy.

I am glad you are feeling a little better- take things easy for a few days.

I would advise against eating anything until at least 12 hours after the last episode of vomiting/diarrhoea but you need fluids, slowly introduced and then maybe some black tea or thin soup. Your body will let you know when you are ready to eat more solids so take it steady.
I hope you're on the mend soon.

Coca cola (bottled or canned) diluted with bottled water is good for stomach upsets on holiday. The coke must be from a sealed can or bottle and the water from a sealed bottle so all clean. It contains sugar and salts which your body needs after periods of V and D and of course water to rehydrate.

LesleyHarp Mon 17-Feb-25 14:47:16

Most likely the salad and could be ecoli

AuntieE Mon 17-Feb-25 13:30:55

I feel sure the culprit was the salad, after all the treacle slice had been baked, and cream even if it is slightly off, which you would have tasted, does not usually cause a tummy upset.

I hope you are over it now, or have been in touch with your doctor if you still are ill.

AlpineGranny Mon 17-Feb-25 13:28:37

Glad to hear you're on the mend. I never buy bagged salad anymore since my daughter was hospitalised with ecoli after eating lettuce from a bag. Drs agreed it was that, she's a vegetarian and had only eaten the lettuce for lunch. All the very best to you now.

wibblywobblywobblebottom Mon 17-Feb-25 13:23:02

Probably the cream.

crazyH Mon 17-Feb-25 09:40:51

Slept much better last night - slight stomach cramps. Hopefully on the mend - will see how it goes today. If the bleed continues, I will definitely make an appointment to see the Doctor. I’m one of those who hates bothering them - I hope there’s a female doctor available.
Thank you all so much - have a lovely week xx

Charleygirl5 Sun 16-Feb-25 22:42:59

Norovirus on the whole lasts 48 hours.

I think the culprit was the salad, unlikely to be the treacle tart. If it continues tomorrow I would contact your GP because Environmental Health will have to be involved if unwashed hands are the culprit.

I hope you have a better night's sleep.
