Low haemoglobin

DH had his routine diabetic type II check up last Monday. Bloods were taken and late yesterday evening we had a call from the surgery saying the doctor would like to see him to discuss results. Apparently the doctor was holding a clinic on Saturday.

We saw him early afternoon today. All DH's diabetic results have come back with no problems except for the haemoglobin which came back at 108. He's arranged for a Vitamin B12, Ferritin and Folate blood tests, also a poo test. DH has not had any problems with blood but this is a precaution. He may need a colonscopy at some stage.

We feel better that we've seen the GP so quickly and on a Saturday! Just wondering if any one else has been through this and it turned about OK in the end.

How old is your DH?

It’s very trying, but our haemoglobin levels do naturally fall as we get older.

Your doctor sounds well on top of this, covering all the possible causes. The tests will tell him what treatment is needed to solve the problem.

It’s generally pretty easy to treat, as an on-going condition rather than a one-off solution, if you see what I mean.

Nothing much to worry about. Haemoglobin is measured on a range of 0-200. Anything over 120 is normal. Below 67 you die.

DD's was allowed to drop to 73 before she was rung in a panic by her GP telling her to go to the pharmacy immediately and collect a massive over prescription of iron pills as she could have a fatal heart attack at any time. If she thought she was having a heart attack she was to get to hospital immediately.

They should, of course, have sent her to hospital immediately for blood transfusions and iron infusions, but they didn't, presumably to cover up, that for reasons I needn't detail now she had been seeking help for months and they had been refusing to see her.

Anyway, 108 is not far from normal, so you have little to worry about.

MyChart says 118-158 is normal. I think it's slightly higher for men.

If it falls very gradually & people don't want to "bother the doctor" , a presentation with haemoglobin at 50 is survivable. (I've seen this) But very dangerous & limiting by that stage.

Yes, my levels go up and down. I have ferrous sulphate on prescription now.

108 is quite low for a man and it is important that the cause for the anaemia is found. Your GP is doing the appropriate tests . Your DH will probably need an endoscopy and a colonoscopy to see if he is bleeding from the bowel. Hopefully the tests will be done in a timely manner. Try not to worry.
