Amlodipine and Atorvastatin

I’m on Amlodipine and Atorvastatin and my BP and cholesterol have been controlled very well since taking them. I have no problem with taking well established drugs to help me.

When I was diagnosed with PAF the first thing the AF clinic nurse was taken me off Amlodipine as my legs and ankles where swollen and told they always take AF patients off it and wished GPs would prescribe it. For my heart and BP I take Ramipril , Flecainide, Apixaban and Atorvastatin and had no side effects from any of them . When I have a cholesterol test I always have a fastening one as it gives the best results . I take other tablets for constant pain due to my neurological condition plus tablets to help control effects of it.

I had to look that one up, as I've never heard of PAF.

Good to hear that you have had no side effects from all your other meds though, but sorry to hear you are in constant pain.

Mr C was prescribed both Atorvastatin and Amlodipine following open heart surgery two years ago when he was 80. He’s not experienced a side effect from either, I’d certainly have heard about it if he had! They both do their job. His BP is steady and his cholesterol low enough to more than satisfy the cardiologists.

Please don’t worry. It’s truly is best to follow medical advice, any medication comes with a long list of potential side effects. For many people there is no adverse reaction. If any medication does prove to be bothersome a chat with a doctor is the way to go. There are usually alternatives to try. Wishing you well.

Welshy my husband has been on Atorvastatin for years with no side effects at all. I was prescribed Amlodipine and while it worked brilliantly to reduce my BP it caused awful swelling in my feet and ankles. I was changed to Lercanidipine and have been fine. Give the medications a try, if you get unpleasant side effects the GP will try a different variety but these are the most commonly prescribed forms and work for most people.

Amlodipine did the same thing to me, my feet and ankles swelled so badly that it was difficult to get my shoes on. Lercanidipine works just fine for me as well. Amlodipine tends to be the first BP med doctors try because it does suit a lot of patients.
Atorvastatin gave me muscular atrophy, not a common side effect, I was put on another type of statin and it did much the same thing and I was told that I was one of the weird patients who obviously can't take statins, it's a pain in the bum to have to explain it over again to new or trainee doctors even though it's in my notes, but it's not a big issue.
I hope both work for the OP.

Oh I already have muscular atrophy in my right calf from sciatica. I hope it doesn't worsen.

My blood pressure was very high and my cholesterol was 6.3.
After a week my blood pressure was in normal range and after 3 months got my bloods taken again and my cholesterol was 3.8.
I have had no side effects at all.

That's very encouraging, especially after just one week.

I'm not sure what my cholesterol is, as it was last year when I had it taken last. I am having more bloods taken next week though.

That must have given you quite a fright when it didn't stop. Especially as like me you suffer with anxiety.

Understandable for you to feel anxious, with your husband having a few health scares though. I hope he is OK.

Good to hear your BP is back to normal now.

My Dr told me not to take my blood pressure until I have taken the tablets for 4 weeks. I am then to do readings twice a day for 2 weeks. Then to see him again.

Thank you. I think my GP wanted to monitor me as it was A&E that had prescribed the medication. Hubby is doing ok, thank you.

Sorry to hear you were getting severe muscle pain

I already get a lot of pain from my sciatica and arthritis, so I hope the meds don't affect me like that.

Were you not offered anything else?

I take Amlodipine and it controls my blood pressure. I took Atorvastatin for quite a long time but stopped because it was causing me severe muscle pains.

I take these the atorvastatin only thing I will say is follow the advice on box and take just before bed I have been taking for 10 years no problems

I have decided to take them at night but I did read you can take them anytime of day, as long as you keep to that same time.

I take Amlodipine on same dose as you - 5 mg daily. At first my ankles did swell a bit but that soon passed so please don't think - if it happens - that it won't settle. There have been no other side effects and it's a very fast worker. Your BP will be lower within 24 hours!
