It’s 3 years since I began this thread prior to my new hip hop op and it’s still a surprise that we are going strong.
There are many of us on here who can answer most questions and give support and encouragement to anyone setting out on this adventure.
No no need to read all the way through, there are 5000 posts, just ask your question and it will get a friendly and helpful response. Welcome to all.

Thanks Silverlining that’s reassuring, I’m feeling a bit panicky at the moment, I must slow down.

Maybee, I do sympathise, it seems that we have to be our own project managers when dealing with the NHS these days.

teabagwoman When is surgery planned? This is a good time to get it done and dusted, and you will be ready for the cold, frosty weather. I prefer this humidity to the cold!

I know this is nothing to do with hips and knees but want to out this on here because I am probably worrying too much but thought I might get some advice.
I had a blood test this week and got a message from the surgery today to say result was possible diabetes and Did I want to be included on a diabetes nhs group. Obviously yes, but
I was really taken aback because all the info they gave about changing bad diets etc, I cook from scratch and my diet is healthy, more walking, I walk fur miles, less alcohol , only have a couple of glasses a week. lose weight, I lost a stone at SW recently.
I havnt been offered an appointment to discuss.
Would appreciate any advice. Or encouragement.
Thanks ☺️

MayBee70 Fri 15-Aug-25 12:44:17

How can they say 'possible diabetes' and then not even offer you an appointment with someone? I've asked my GP for a blood test so I'm having one done in a week or so so I might be in the same boat as you soon.

silverlining48 Fri 15-Aug-25 13:59:37

I suppose pre diabetes… they were testing for random things inc cholesterol so all results may not be back. I will try a call this afternoon when I hope the lines will not be so busy.
Can’t believe how shocked I was. Especially as I lead a fairly healthy life, bar being a bit+ overweight I suppose. Low BP and heart rate of an athlete. No regular medication. No history in the family, no symptoms they warned of in the info…
I am rambling, apologies.
Hope all goes well with your results next week.

Charleygirl5 Fri 15-Aug-25 14:46:27

silverlining before you waltz off to a pre-diabetic clinic, you want a diagnosis and a repeat bloods that you have it, and only from a GP.

If the diagnosis is correct, you can discuss your concerns with the GP/

silverlining48 Fri 15-Aug-25 18:44:45

Thanks Charleygirl and MayBee. I will wait til Monday to give time for all the blood results to come through before ringing, but can’t get it out of my head.
Friends arriving to stay shortly so hope that will help.
Have a good weekend all

I’ve just been placed on the waiting list for a partial knee replacement. I’m a little concerned as my consultant told me to “mentally prepare for the pain”. What is more ominous is that a good friend, who’s usually very stoic had a full KR last year and she said it was awful. Her other knee needs doing and she can’t face it. I’m not normally scared of operations etc but must admit I’m full of trepidation. If anyone has had a PKR I’d welcome honest views on the experience. Thanks.

Charleygirl5 Mon 18-Aug-25 18:34:34

You will find on here that the pain varies. I do not know of anybody who has had a partial knee replacement. I am one of the unlucky ones who experienced a lot of pain.

I knew what to expect when I had my second knee operated and it was still very painful at six weeks.

A male friend of mine was happy to go up and down stairs the following day when discharged and had very little pain.

I cannot explain it.

silverlining48 Mon 18-Aug-25 19:03:19

I don’t know of anyone having a partial knee replacement but initially it will hurt to an extent but the reward is greater than the pain, it’s the joy of no pain.
Bit like childbirth perhaps 🤔 grin.
You will be fine, and no pain is your gain.
Good luck and Keep in touch with us,

surfsup Mon 18-Aug-25 20:58:49

Thank you ladies. It will be great not to have this pain which does impact my life. I’ll definitely keep you informed when the time comes.

ginny Mon 18-Aug-25 23:09:57

The pain after my replacements was nowhere near the pain I had beforehand.
Within a few weeks I was pain free and 10 years on I still am. Had I not had them done I would be in a wheelchair.
Get it done and best wishes for a speedy recovery recovery.

cornergran Mon 18-Aug-25 23:21:08

Perhaps I was one of the lucky ones after TKR. Yes, there was discomfort - it’s not gentle surgery - but if I’m honest not real pain. Once home paracetamol kept pain at bay, I approached the recommended exercises with caution not wanting to aggravate spinal problems. I did what I could and kept moving. Regular ice, rest and elevation kept swelling down. It’s very individual surfsup. Please don’t be afraid of surgery, the pain free future is well worth any temporary discomfort. If there is pain after discharge don’t be afraid to ask for pain relief from your GP

If you have any questions about equipment etc or need advice or support just ask.

silverlining48 Tue 19-Aug-25 14:08:00

I can bore you with my shoe horn collection… grin
Long handled, short handled, mini handbag size, plastic or metal, one in the car, one at the front door one at the back door… and of course one in my handbag in case I am trying on new-shoes.
I still use them despite being 3 years post hip hop op.
Others will have different favourite aids.

surfsup Tue 19-Aug-25 18:44:29

Thank you so much for replying. The shoe horns did make me chuckle. I shall ensure I stock up flowers

Well Hip/Knee people... I've mowed back garden this pm ..took my time and there was only 1 bin full of mainly weeds - its only small and the grass not long as have a'man' who usually does it but he's away and I could see straggly weeds which i hate and have been sitting down on patio chair to pull them out...I had a little pain in lower back but not on hip or knee...

I think I'm testing myself but am 21 wks post op today...wonder if the pain will hit tomorrow or Thursday...but have plenty of strong pain relief...feel good at reaching the point where i could actually want to mow and did...grin

Charleygirl5 Tue 19-Aug-25 19:02:32

Bea, with luck, you should be okay because you took the time to do the job. I have a long, narrow stretch at the front which looks similar. I got rid of my mower many years ago so I will have to contact the chap who usually does it. It is the sight of it which irritates me.

I tried to buy shoes today for my very wide feet. Usually, a 6 would suffice, but the assistant thought a size 8 or 9 would help. Yes, widthways, but amazingly they were slipping up and down at the rear.

Bea65 Tue 19-Aug-25 19:06:23

I bought some black slip ons with white soles ..look like sketchers but they're from B&M ..perfect for the garden and safe...

MayBee70 Wed 20-Aug-25 16:27:22

I used to use a patella strap on my knee in the past but because the pain is all on the inside now it just seems to make it worse. However I’ve bought some Kinesiology tape and my physio is going to show me how to use it next week. I’ve got some quite tight fitting leggings that seem to help. I’ve often wondered why someone doesn’t make leggings with knee support.

Well done bea, that’s really good. I could cut my grass if only it was there to cut! It’s very brown and I’m not sure it will grow again even if it rains from now until November.
surfsup one of my friends had a TKR which was fairly painful, but once the pain had eased, she then was desperate to get the other one done too!

silverlining48 Wed 20-Aug-25 17:54:23

Well done but suggest you take it a bit easy tomorrow Bea. Pace yourself. smile

surfsup Wed 20-Aug-25 19:04:55

Redcar Thank you for that. I’m sure I’ll be fine once it’s all over. Just a bit apprehensive!

My front garden grass is scorched 🥵 a real mess an eyesore
But the back garden tends to flood a bit so the grass is healthier

I did have to put my electric blanket on last two nights as could feel ache around lumbar region but it’s tolerable today and slight vertical ache along the top of thigh..yes feel proud that I had the confidence to get mower out 😊
