Well, hello everyone! And here was I thinking nothing was going on on this lovely thread because I haven’t had a single notification since I last posted which was just after your THR, teabag. Wish I’d picked earlier on your sore heels, mine were awful & someone on here (where else?!) advised a partly filled hot water bottle to put underneath them which did help. Sorry to hear about your ribs, Maizie & glad they’re better now. Good to know your hip survived. Only just over two weeks now before I celebrate my new hip’s first anniversary - how time flies! Best wishes to everyone awaiting procedures of any sort.

I do now since I did that a few months ago. It started around the same time for soop's kitchen, out of the blue, but thankfully that stopped for no reason.

My sister in law by marriage had both hips replaced this year, the last 3 months ago. She is pain-free now and is considering returning to work just before Christmas (necessity). She is in her early 70's.

grammargran I can't believe it is a year since your surgery, time has flown.

I got notifications for a while but then they stopped for no obvious reason.

My ankle is still hurting and no one seems to know why. It’s the outside of my ankle, really painful at times and tender to the touch. My foot and ankle is quite swollen and stiff in the morning and I’m beginning to wonder if a tendon is a bit inflamed. A tubigrip seems to be helping a bit. I’m also still getting very tired but hopefully that will improve soon.

teabag, check out phlebitis. I’m a bit prone to it & had a bout a few weeks ago. The official name is superficial pulmonary phlebitis. It’s a small blood clot in an outer vein rather than a deep one & nothing like as bothersome. However, it is painful and very tender around the area. Mine finished up around my ankle and is treated with a cream applied several times a day. Worth looking at.

Thanks Grammargran, but no signs of inflammation and I’m on post operative blood thinners. Have to admit that I’m feeling a bit down at the moment. I feel so very tired, my ankle’s giving me problems and now I’m getting pain in my good hip from time to time and it feels as though it will give way. Not sure whether to push on through or take it easier. Am contemplating going back to two crutches. It’s 4 weeks since my op and I know recovery plateaus out but….

teabags please, still get it checked out. Tenderness and swelling ring alarm bells, especially only four weeks post op. As for blood thinners, I’ve been on aspirin for around 18 months & still fall foul of phlebitis. With Hirudoid cream it’s quickly sorted.

If you are considering using crutches, I would rest over the weekend and try to get your hip examined next week. Four weeks since surgery is no time at all.

It takes around three months for the tiredness to wear off, as you have had major surgery, although these days one is almost treated like a day case.

Your other hip is adjusting, but not making a good job of it, if you feel it may give way.

I haven’t been getting notifications either. I will try it.
I have had contact from the hospital re my hip replacement. They offered a different consultant as mine has “a very long list” and I was very happy to accept. We didn’t hit it off! I was surprised when the booking clerk said it was for THR revision - No! It’s for my first new hip. Glad I won’t be seeing him again - how could he make such a basic mistake? He barely spoke to me, didn’t discuss symptoms or what the surgery would involve and must have been looking at someone else’s scan. I think a letter to PALS is in order.

You are probably right Nannytopsy. Did you get an apology for the mistake?

What age group was he in? Elderly and arrogant and had better things to do than examine you?

Short and a little plump but obsessed by my weight. Glad to be seeing someone else now.

Weight unless it’s excess Ive, shoukd not be an issue with replacement hips and /or knees.

Nannytopsy 25 years ago I worked with so many of them. I thought that was a dying breed. Please check the next surgeon carefully. I am happy to help because some are barely fit to tie their laces.

I met his type 40 years ago when having my children. I was treated as a walking uterus, with no intelligence despite having a PhD !

Sadly, they seem to be a breed that will never die out. I hope you have a much better experience with the new medic nannytopsy.

Nannytopsy You forget that his degree is far superior to yours. You may have a PhD, but you are a woman, and his degree was 6 years long in his day + plus the 12 years of intermittent studying afterwards to reach his present, exalted position. I think you have had a lucky escape.

In retrospect I think it’s seeing a rather unpleasant consultant when I first had problems with my knee that resulted in me just trying to deal with it myself. If I’d seen the consultant then that I saw last week makes me wonder if I’d be in a much better place with my knee now.It’s a bit Russian roulette isn’t it.

I was lucky because I had worked with a few on my list, so I knew exactly what they were like. My first choice had to retire from surgery because of ill health, and I was aware of the surgical background of the fellow who operated on me, but his sense of humour was nonexistent. I hope my knees will "see me out", and I don't need hip replacements.

Just as I thought things were starting to go wrong I turned the corner. I’m now walking unaided, my good hip only twinges occasionally and my ankle is improving. Saw the physio yesterday, who was well pleased and thinks the swelling in my ankle is exacerbating the very tight tendons I have and will go on gradually improving.

Just want to say thank you to you ladies for your support. I’m so glad zi had it done, walking is so much easier apart from the lack of pain in my hip.

That’s good to hear teabagwoman, glad things are working well for you. It’s wonderful to be pain free.

I have already said this about my surgeon, but will repeat, as we are on the subject of unpleasant surgeons, this was my experience.
As he stood over me, as I lay on the bed just prior to my operation he fully dressed and me not, drawing arrows on the top of my leg/ backside, suddenly out of the blue he made a remark which really upset me about weight.
I had met him twice before the operation when we were both fully dressed and he failed to mention weight then, but he waited til I was my vulnerable and half naked and suddenly said ‘isn’t it about time you lost some weight’.
I said nothing but did speak to him about it afterwards. Hi# response was that he woukd tell his mother the same thing. I said I am glad not to be I your mother.

My surgeon talked more about weight than my hip and threatened that he would refuse to operate if I arrived for surgery having put on weight. So glad someone else is taking over.

I read somewhere that there are no contraindications for hip surgery if the patient is overweight. Of course there is massive overweight which can affect general anaesthetics etc.
