charleygirl all i can think of is to empty the contents of the bedpan into a bucket (preferably with a lid) and carry it using a couple of fingers on one hand, while the rest of the fingers on that hand, and the other hand hold onto the zimmer frame.

I have been trying to figure out for a relative how to empty a bedpan when walking with a Zimmer frame, and even my practical brain has left me. The closest I could get was a clip-on basket, but I do not know if it would be wide enough.

It would cost to employ somebody to do that task only, hence the brain being in gear.

Sealover, what good news! Recovery time all through summer, not like Redcar, Grammaretto and myself through the miserable grey damp months we’ve just come through. You’ll be absolutely fine, especially with all of us watching your every move. Bea , you’ve done absolutely the right thing, taking back a bit of control, and when you make it to your own proper loo, you’ll be well on your way. Has your DD arrived home safe and sound?

bea well done for cancelling some of your RA visits, I hope this works out better for you. I’m sure your appetite will return as you feel better. Have you got any ready meals in the freezer that you could cook yourself? I hope you sleep better tonight.

Bought myself a commode but never used it for that purpose but as a chair downstairs because t had the required 90 degree angle. Not super comfy but it did the job. nHopefully you will be using your ‘proper’ toilet very soon. Give it a try. I know I was going upstairs almost straight away. . Just hold on and don’t carry anything unless it’s in a cross over bag.

silverlining48 it’s the emptying of commode that I’m unable to do

, I’ve cancelled the RA early 7-11, and teatime 4-6:30pm so RA empties commode @1ish and does ask if I’d like a sandwich- im not a bread person &also very little appetite.. am sure will improve

Sealover That is very good news. The sooner you get it over and done with, the more time you will have to enjoy summer pain-free.

The first 2-3 weeks are not easy, but we are here if you need practical help or a shoulder to lean on.

Have you got your house sorted out, hopefully somebody to clean it and change your bedding for starters. A supply of microwavable food would be useful.

Just to say a big thank you for all your supportive and encouraging messages about my forthcoming THR scheduled for 7th July. I'm the one with all the 'what ifs'. I had 4 lovely conversations with women friends last week and I had come to a place of peace about the whole situation and worked out that it was 13 weeks today. I had a phone call from the hospital this morning asking about my holiday plans?! A lovely, friendly lady from the Bookings offered me the 10th May, I am staggered. She has arranged my pre op this Friday with a nurse and physio. She picked up on my shock, surprise etc and will meet me on Friday with a coffee and hugs. Words fail me.

I wonder how these RAs manage in their homes if they think what they did in yours would be acceptable.

I do hope your DD gets in touch soon. The time difference will be hitting her.

This week marks two weeks since surgery. Try to do one little thing for yourself each day, even if it is just cutting off dead stems and disposing of them correctly!

Grammaretto I disagree with your physio. Have you done anything different to have put strain on that hip? Is that leg shorter all of a sudden?

Just read your post in another thread. I am sorry you havnt heard from your family members, it’s disappointing. Hope they get in touch soon, or maybe you coukd contact them.

Bea if you say you aren’t a good patient and don’t seem to need much from the carer if changing a flower vase is the only thing you needed her to do, I wonder if you really need anyone coming in at all.

I understand that you are upset that your daughter has gone , my dd lives abroad too, but have a think about what you actually need in terms of help because most of us have not been offered help and managed on our own. As the days and weeks go by you will be able to as well.

bea your RAs don’t seem to be helping much! I hope you hear soon from your DD that she’s safely home again. I’m sure you’ll feel better and more relaxed when you know she’s safe, but you are bound to feel sad that you’re on your own again. I hope that you’ll have a better sleep tonight, it’s quite depressing to have such little sleep. I always feel that my various aches and pains are worse if I haven’t slept well.
I’m still doing my exercises, 5 months after the operation and feel that they help. Keep in touch, things will get better!

I suppose it's good that you have a RA but they sound sloppy.

I also worry about my DC when they are travelling, even though they are
grown ups. I'm sure that's normal.

I have been bothered by a pain in my leg/side and can't put pressure on that leg without squealing. It's the side with the new hip but I've spoken to the physio who thinks it's normal and just needs rest.

Bea bumping just means charleygirl is ‘bumping’ the thread to the top of the Forum list. Sometimes we appear to start slipping down so the dancing girls are difficult to spot.

You do seem unlucky with your RAs. What a daft thing to do with the water! Oh course you’re going to be anxious until your DD lands safely and is back home. I get worried when mine are driving across the country. I’m just so sorry you’re having all this bother when you should just be concentrating on getting stronger. The only plus is this may motivate you to try to do more things for yourself so that you can get shot of them quicker. Don’t let the exercises slide, they will really help. And keep in touch with us.

I don’t know what the bumping means😟

Am on my own today except have had the 1 visit from rehab assistant (RA) )there was nothing for her to do as am not hungry and mood bit low due to DD departure and her flight not yet arrived in NYC ..Once I know she is safely back in her apt, then maybe I’ll eat something… I know about nutrition and the body needs nourishing but anxiety stops me sometimes…
I asked the RA to change the water in vase as its a week old ..she did pleasantly but didn’t cut the mouldy ends of stems and just put back same into fresh water so they looked as limp as ever …think I’m over demanding…?
Also she poured the stale water into the washing up bowl which I had just put boiling water and suds to clean coffee cups and was annoyed she did this so had to refresh the cups and the sink..am not a good patient today…

I am bumping this so we do not vanish tomorrow morning

After my hip replacement op I borrowed a single duvet and used that in my double bed it was much easier to manage in the early days. Only a bottom sheet then the duvet units cover. I can't beat a sheet as well as a duvet over me.

Bea I also have a king-size duvet, and it will be between 2 and 3 months after surgery before you feel you can tackle the monstrosity of changing it.

We certainly would not want your helpers doing it, as they may strain their backs!

Just ask, we have a shortcut for most things and as you will have noticed we do not like to spend money as most are temporary.

No REDCAR I haven’t slept just dozed off and on …

🙏🙏 wise GNs re a sheet between me and duvet cover ..will try this .. yes always struggle with covers as mine are all King size 😊

I am lucky because my cleaner changes my bedding each week, so I have not had to have a sheet between me and the cover for a few years now. I agree; it is easier to wrap the duvet around you when it is very cold without a sheet in between.
