I have osteoarthritis and it's everywhere used to joke only place it's not is my hair! About 10/12 wks ago my hip and lower back became sore pain going into groin and down past knee. It's only on one side Im sore all the time particularly at night tried everything legal that I can. I'm wondering has anyone tried canibis? Seriously thinking of this now quality of life badly affected. Going to Dr's to ask about it today. My wee grandson was crying for his Nanna she died in November it was his big sisters birthday at wkend. I couldn't even lift him to comfort him 😢

Sorry about your pain, lilliesmum, but it put me in mind of my dear friend and neighbour. Over the course of a few months she had pain in her groin that wouldn't go away. She was constantly back and forth to the docs for pain relief, and was sent for physio. Nothing helped, and then the pain started radiating down her leg, affecting her knee. She could barely walk, so eventually had an MRI scan. Low and behold, she had a fracture in her hip joint. Doctors insisted she must have had a fall, but she definitely never did. Two weeks later she had a total hip replacement. So don't be fobbed off if the pain is unusual for you, and does not get better, it could be masking something that needs attention.

I also found Naproxen by far the best thing when waiting for a TKR and am exasperated by GPs reluctance to prescribe it, but I think you may be in a different league. All sympathy and best of luck with the cannabis.

Please remember, and I’m sure you all know, that sourcing cannabis from friends or growing your own isn’t legal, I think that’s mad, but would hate anyone to get into trouble with an over zealous police officer.

I have no idea why Cannabis was upgraded to Class B, can o my imagine it was because of chemically enhancing it and making it more prone to giving some young people paranoid.

I do have an unusual and somewhat unpopular view and opinion on drugs. I firmly believe that if drug use was legalised, sold only under licence and available to adults we might find some of the worst split and mixed drugs going away.

Am sorry your GP is reluctant to prescribe ..why ? I’m 7 weeks post THR and have widespread OA .. MY hip seems to be healing and scar looks good but my knee pain is horrendous more than before as before
I can’t reconcile this as had always said to physio my knee stings all the time..now it’s worse than ever and I’m taking more pain relief and still in pain so I’m leaning towards ??

I take co- codamol, 500/30. It does give relief but not for long. Morphine upsets me, as does ibuprofen. I wish I could try something else but doc seems reluctant. I would try anything, addictive or not, just to ease this wretched pain.

I’m the same, I have chronic pain all the time from both hips and take co-codamol 30/500, which I’ve been taking for four years. I also take ibuprofen. I tried Naproxen but it didn’t touch the pain. I have cold sprays and sit on cold packs, which do help for a while when the burning starts. I’d love to have some relief from the constant pain which is so wearing.

Check out wiki medbud. There are loads of clinics prescribing medical marijuana now . I'm with Integro & tried vaping the flowers but now on oils as vapes made me cough too much. You can get reduced rates for certain benefits. The clinic gets a summary of care from your GP and a multi disciplinary team including a GP review your case, drugs etc. It costs around £5.50 -12.00 a gram for flowers with a minimum order of 10g plus postage & follow ups at £50 per consultation every 3 months plus 2 initial consultations . It helps but it takes a while to find the sweet spot between not being stoned and pain amelioration. The oils are priced differently. You need to have tried 2 pain relief medications unsuccessfully although it can be one with some clinics. I'd pick the one with less criteria, you can always change clinics once 'in'. There are lists of conditions they will prescribe for.

you can get cannabis oil quite legally online and from most health food shops. Good luck!

I had zapain for a back injury which was extremely effective for short term use along with I think was Valium to relax the muscles . Liquid senokot prevented constipation. However, whether you can be prescribed it for long term relief I’m not sure as the dr said it was addictive ( but nothing else was working). Is worth a try ! I believe hospitals also have pain management clinics where you could ask for a referral . Good luck!

Whatever you do, do NOT let your GP prescribe you Gabapentin. It is addictive and mood altering - some have committed suicide after taking it. At best, it makes folks mean and nasty.

I tried cannabis oil but it tasted so disgusting I decided the pain was preferable. Now I'm on cocodamol.

I don't think the cannabis oils you can get at places like Holland and Barrett are the medicinal sort.

A good friend has been on Gapentin for years - is disabled - and she is Not Mean or Nasty .. you shouldn’t express comments like this as it is triggering to many!

Gabapentin

Solpadeine, which contains codeine and paracetamol is quite a good painkiller, though not sure if it would be enough for extreme pain.

My nephew was given Gapapentin and it gave him a mini stroke.

Cannabis oil available in shops, online and health food shops is minus THC, so doesn’t have the same pain relieving properties as Cannabis oil available on prescription

If you’re ā€œpain clinicā€ at your hospital is like mine, just don’t bother! Budgets no longer allow referrals to anywhere helpful and I waited a year for my referral, it comprised two phone calls and a letter to my GP recommending stopping my pain patches (which they promptly did!), yoga and meditation

ā€œYourā€ not ā€œyou’reā€

My friend has been on this for 20+ years and you would not know she has RA now. before she was on crutches and wore arm and leg support and walk with 2 sticks. Her consultant (private put her on it) and she has never looked back. She does not even get drowsy on it.
I also have OA and suffer with constant very severe pain in both back, hips and legs. I live on tablets and have tried everything going, everything makes me drowsy including the gabapentin so I can't drive nor concentrate to work. I take 8 co-codamol a day and 2 slow release morphine capsules, I have liquid Zomorph as a top up when I really can cope with the pain, which is at least once both day and night. I constantly wake due to the pain and have about 4 pillows around me so my legs and arms don't touch each other. It truly is debilitating and life changing. I feel for everyone of you who is experiencing pain like this. I had a back operation for scoliosis which went wrong 7 years ago, and dare not have another one too do more corrections. my GP has just added Celecoxib, at the moment I take 100mg twice a day but can go up to 4, I have not experienced any relief from them as yet.

I forgot to say I always walk with to walking poles, which helps me a lot when out and about, but makes it difficult for carrying anything so I have a rucksack permanently on my back LOL

My husband was prescribed this and the side effect of mood swings was terrible.
He knew he wasn’t himself, after about 4 months he asked for a review of his medication,I went along and confirmed that he was angry and as you say nasty, which wasn’t like him.
He had stopped taking the tablets about 2 weeks before the appointment, it didn’t take long to get back to normal.

Only thing about co-codamol is, it makes me confused. I only take it in the night to help with pain & sleep.

Gardenersdelight2 Thu 15-May-25 11:27:46

Re gabapentin I've been on it for several years and it doesn't make me mean or nasty! As with all medications side effects cause problems with some people but not all
