I have osteoarthritis and it's everywhere used to joke only place it's not is my hair! About 10/12 wks ago my hip and lower back became sore pain going into groin and down past knee. It's only on one side Im sore all the time particularly at night tried everything legal that I can. I'm wondering has anyone tried canibis? Seriously thinking of this now quality of life badly affected. Going to Dr's to ask about it today. My wee grandson was crying for his Nanna she died in November it was his big sisters birthday at wkend. I couldn't even lift him to comfort him 😢

you can get cannabis oil quite legally online and from most health food shops. Good luck!

Check out wiki medbud. There are loads of clinics prescribing medical marijuana now . I'm with Integro & tried vaping the flowers but now on oils as vapes made me cough too much. You can get reduced rates for certain benefits. The clinic gets a summary of care from your GP and a multi disciplinary team including a GP review your case, drugs etc. It costs around £5.50 -12.00 a gram for flowers with a minimum order of 10g plus postage & follow ups at £50 per consultation every 3 months plus 2 initial consultations . It helps but it takes a while to find the sweet spot between not being stoned and pain amelioration. The oils are priced differently. You need to have tried 2 pain relief medications unsuccessfully although it can be one with some clinics. I'd pick the one with less criteria, you can always change clinics once 'in'. There are lists of conditions they will prescribe for.

I’m the same, I have chronic pain all the time from both hips and take co-codamol 30/500, which I’ve been taking for four years. I also take ibuprofen. I tried Naproxen but it didn’t touch the pain. I have cold sprays and sit on cold packs, which do help for a while when the burning starts. I’d love to have some relief from the constant pain which is so wearing.

I take co- codamol, 500/30. It does give relief but not for long. Morphine upsets me, as does ibuprofen. I wish I could try something else but doc seems reluctant. I would try anything, addictive or not, just to ease this wretched pain.

I also found Naproxen by far the best thing when waiting for a TKR and am exasperated by GPs reluctance to prescribe it, but I think you may be in a different league. All sympathy and best of luck with the cannabis.

Am sorry your GP is reluctant to prescribe ..why ? I’m 7 weeks post THR and have widespread OA .. MY hip seems to be healing and scar looks good but my knee pain is horrendous more than before as before
I can’t reconcile this as had always said to physio my knee stings all the time..now it’s worse than ever and I’m taking more pain relief and still in pain so I’m leaning towards ??

Please remember, and I’m sure you all know, that sourcing cannabis from friends or growing your own isn’t legal, I think that’s mad, but would hate anyone to get into trouble with an over zealous police officer.

I have no idea why Cannabis was upgraded to Class B, can o my imagine it was because of chemically enhancing it and making it more prone to giving some young people paranoid.

I do have an unusual and somewhat unpopular view and opinion on drugs. I firmly believe that if drug use was legalised, sold only under licence and available to adults we might find some of the worst split and mixed drugs going away.

Sorry about your pain, lilliesmum, but it put me in mind of my dear friend and neighbour. Over the course of a few months she had pain in her groin that wouldn't go away. She was constantly back and forth to the docs for pain relief, and was sent for physio. Nothing helped, and then the pain started radiating down her leg, affecting her knee. She could barely walk, so eventually had an MRI scan. Low and behold, she had a fracture in her hip joint. Doctors insisted she must have had a fall, but she definitely never did. Two weeks later she had a total hip replacement. So don't be fobbed off if the pain is unusual for you, and does not get better, it could be masking something that needs attention.

My surgery won't consider prescribing medical cannabis and I get suicidal with pain at times .

I bet the GP's would take it if they were in agonising pain 24/7 !

I had acupuncture for mine from the physio. It was amazing, my knee felt numb as soon as it was done, I hobbled in and could walk downstairs coming out! Must go again as it wore off after about a year.
Best £40 I’ve spent in a long time.

Years ago, a neighbour who was a nurse grew her own cannabis on her kitchen windowsill. She moved away about 30 years ago and we're still in touch. She's now 78 with a range of health issues and is still growing cannabis! I could ask where she gets it from?

Obviously she gets it from her own plants.
But if you want to buy seeds your spoilt for choice.

I have a friend who swears by cannabis for her chronic pain. Not the legal kind. She adds it to cookies. It's a very effective painkiller and you don't need high doses. Not so easy for your average older person to get hold of though.
Frankly I don't think addiction to codeine or anything else is a priority when you're in your 80s and in constant pain.

For many years we sourced cannabis for a friend with MS.
We knew who we were buying it from, someone who grew their own.
She used it in biscuit form.
Today you have to be careful of your sources.

Codeine does not cause addiction. It can be addictive so some people become addicted to it. Most of the people who use codeine painkillers do not become addicted.

I agree. I have co-codamol on repeat prescription, but don't always order it because I don't always need it. I can go for weeks without taking it, but it works well when I do. I doubt if I'm addicted - I certainly don't get shaky or anything if I don't take it.

growstuff Tue 13-May-25 13:13:39

Codeine is indeed a form of morphine, but much weaker, although it's still an opioid and can be addictive.

A "prodrug" is biologically inactive, but becomes active when it enters the body and is metabolized. Codeine enhances the pain-killing effect of paracetamol on its own. A patient could not get the same pain relief from paracetamol on its own without overdosing and causing liver damage.

Baggs Tue 13-May-25 13:05:38

I hope you find some relief for your pain, lilliesmum.

What painkillers have you got? Your GP should be able to help at least a bit.

ExDancer Tue 13-May-25 12:59:38

Cozzy - I got this from Wikipaedia so it may be incorrect
"Codeine is an opiate and prodrug of morphine mainly used to treat pain,"
(do you think 'prodrug' is a typo for 'product'?)
so it seems codeine is made from morphine and not cannabis as I thought, which is confusing ..... anyway it seems its an opiate too.
What we need is a pain killer that works and doesn't cause addiction.

By the way, I don’t think Co-codamol contains cannabis in any form, my understanding is that it’s a combination of strong codeine and high dose paracetamol

Also, I’m on statins and the doctor in the clinic said this was ok, I’m also taking Setraline 100mg and three different BP pills

It doesn't. Co-codamol is paracetamol and codeine. It's available in three different strengths of codeine.

I’m reading with interest as I’m waiting for THR and in quite a bit of pain. Haven’t tried cannabis but would echo what Cossy said about everything else. However I do get less pain in my leg if I use my small rollator to get around both indoors and outside. Not sure if that would help you Lilliesmum.

I found the other week that I was walking normally in a supermarket because I was pushing a trolley...

I'm going to see an osteopath next week who helped me when my arthritis first started to impact upon my life. Pre covid I loved having a sauna but am worried that it is now one of the places where I'm most likely to catch it. Years ago I knew someone with MS who swore by cannabis so I might try that albeit not knowing how to. I tend to forget about taking paracetamol which is safe if taken correctly and I also forget to take turmeric; tend to get out of the habit.
