I can’t tell you much but I have had gout in my hand. Very painful.
It is to do with uric acid and not to do with drinking too much alcohol, I’m TT.
A course of tablets cleared it up.

My S and GS suffer from gout regularly.
They take Allopurinol, I think they take that regularly and Naproxen during a flare up.
You have my sympathy if it you who is affected, it can be very very painful.

My OH suffered with it in his foot and found certain things like red wine (although he's by no means a drinker) offal, such as kidney, liver and black pudding, marmite which contains yeast, triggered episodes.
During the pandemic, I was making my own bread and we couldn't understand why he was getting gout so often. It wasn't until we realised I was using yeast in it and it was causing the gout. We went back to bought bread and it stopped.
Now he only gets it occasionally but when he does, he drinks lots of water and elevates his leg. It helps to reduce the uric acid crystals in the joint.

I have had gout once in my big toe. Very, very painful. Drinking lots of water helps lower the uric acid.

I had it once in my big toe, it is indeed very painful. I was quite young, only early 30s, wasn't drinking at all as I was pregnant then breastfeeding so it's nothing to do with port! However, I had changed my diet to include more healthy whole wheat bread which proved not to be healthy for me.

Allopurinol brought me out in a rash. It wasn't until I stopped breastfeeding that I was able to have a cortisone injection into my toe joint which worked well.

My uncles gout is exacerbated by beer so he switched to wine and cut out offal, Marmite, purinol containing foods.

DH used to get gout in his big toes, as his Dad before him, but started taking Allopurinol years ago and it's worked wonders for him with no side effects so far, he's eighty.

I found anchovies to be a trigger.
