Has anyone had tooth roots removed. My crown snapped off and just the roots to be extracted.
How bad is it?
Dreading it.

Recently had one of my back teeth extracted. Was given 3 numbing injections then it took my dentist about 3 - 4 minutes to pull it out painlessly.

Good news.

Hope the recovery goes well, Sikipoo. Keep up with the salt water rinses, they should help with the healing process.

That's really good to hear, Sikipoo. flowers

Well, all done and dusted and I was worried for nothing!
Thanks to you all for your kindness and support.
It meant a lot. Xx

Thanks to you all. I’m in tomorrow afternoon. Think of me! Main worries are that I am on blood thinners . Dentist has told me not to take one on the morning , so hopefully not a massacre and secondly some years ago I had an extraction and ended up with dry socket. Not an experience I would want to repeat .

Been there with dry socket, the most painful experience of my life! Good luck, you'll be fine.

I'm having a tooth removed, maybe 2 with sedation on the NHS. I've waited 10 months
Absolutely dreading it, need sedation for phobia and gag reflex. Scared for the whole thing!

No problem at all. If you can't stop worrying ask dentist for a tranquilliser besides the analgesic.

Also start to take painkillers before the dental anesthetic wears off

Everyone is different, as are every tooth/root extraction, I’ve had several done and it’s ok, I think the thought is probably worse than the actuality.
All I would say is don’t be a hero and if possible get someone who drive you home afterwards in case you feel a bit wobbly after the procedure and don’t forget to eat before you go as you won’t be able to do so afterwards for four hours at least

Glad to hear it. Well done

I've had it done and, although I was terrified beforehand, it was no problem at all.

Great news.

This exact same thing happened to me just a few weeks ago, emergency dentist appt, root removed painlessly, have a tooth on a plate as a temporary measure, few more weeks for bone to grow back then £3,500 for an implant as a bridge isn’t suitable for me sadly!!!

Sorry, I was relating my own experience and got carried away. Sikìpoo, I am sure you will be absolutely fine. Have any pain relief offered. Apparently, my problem roots are shared with approximately 1% of the population. I am sure that you will be in the 99% where everything will run smoothly and the roots will be out before you know it. I have never had a tooth out as an adult and the one I had out never formed properly as well as being damaged by medication. It had lasted at least fifty years longer than it should have done until it finally outstayed its welcome for the last time. I would imagine that all these factors will have contributed towards my silly roots. I am sure your experience will be extremely straightforward, like most people, and you will be in and out of the chair before you know it l.

get him to tell you the price. You will be so shocked you will not notice what he is doing <lol>

Seriously though, you will feel tugging, but you will be well anesthetized

janeainsworth Mon 01-Sept-25 16:20:07

I’m sure the OP felt a lot better after reading that musicgirl 🙄

Don’t take any notice of her, OP. If you feel any discomfort at all, let the dentist know & I’m sure they’ll be able to give you more local anaesthetic & make sure you’re ok with what they’re doing.

Ive had back twisted roots removed which included removing some bone and stitches. I can honestly say I didnt feel a thing - not even the injections. The thought of it was worse than the event! Next to no bleeding. Paracetamol if required and salt water rinses. Good luck.

I am waiting for this to be done under sedation, hopefully. I had a tooth removed last year after the crown fell off but, after a lot of very painful pulling and tugging involving two different dentists, the roots remained stubbornly intact - l have very strong bones, apparently. A further X-ray showed that the roots were twisted and fused with the teeth either side. It was a somewhat painful experience to say the least. As the teeth either side of the gap have never had any decay so no work done on them, it is obviously more complicated than it first appeared.

You'll be well numbed. Dentist will use a lever type instrument inserted at side of tooth to prise the broken tooth out of the gum. If a single root tooth usually a pair of fine forceps will do the job. Take it dentist has xrayed to check if roots are straight. Never as bad as you'd think.

Ladyleftfieldlover Mon 01-Sept-25 14:20:37

I had a root extracted a few years ago, I didn’t feel a thing as I was well numbed up. I went into work but after a few hours and the anaesthetic wore off I felt a little wobbly. I went home and the next morning OH said I looked like an anteater! All was well after a day or two.

Mauduit24 Mon 01-Sept-25 14:13:41

Get some arnica tablets from the chemists it will help minimise any bruising.

Aveline Mon 01-Sept-25 11:44:46

DH just had this and was neither up nor down. I'd made a bit of a fuss of him, choosing nice soft food etc but he was absolutely fine. You will be too. Good luck.

crazyH Mon 01-Sept-25 11:18:04

Painless - I felt a bit of tugging , that’s because my roots were quite deep, I guess
You’ll be fine.!!
