Irritation of one eye

You need to book an appointment with a GP, don't ask us to hazard a guess. Eyesight is too precious to mess around with, please get a proper check. Ring 111 if GP not offering early appointment.

Make an appointment with your optician, it will probably be quicker than the Drs, it does cost £25 though. Ours doesn’t see eye problems now anyway Hope you get it sorted.

As above - get medical advice asap.

I have one eye that is more sensitive to my hayfever than the other. It can be very red and weepy. Antihistamines help.

As others have said get medical advice. If you’re unable to get a gp appointment in reasonable time it could be worth checking whether your local hospital has an eye casualty department.

Same here travelsafar I rang my independent optician today and have an urgent appointment for tomorrow morning. Thought best to see her than our (albeit wonderful) pharmacists.

DP had the same thing recently, the eye drops did help but he also used an eye mask that you heat for a few seconds in the microwave, you can use a hot face cloth as well.He also got an eye patch which meant he could keep that eye closed or protected.Took two weeks or thereabouts to clear up.

Was he told what it was Oreo?

An eye infection on the rim of the eyelid I think.

Beware as it may be a foreign body in the eye...where I live you need to attend the Eye hospital for things like this. It's a long wait but on the second visit as problem not resolved the doctor found a small sliver of plastic in my eye. Instant resolution!!!

Been to the optician & got reassurance. It was only a blocked inner eye gland deep in the eye pocket, not as sore and inflamed today and it’s already settling. The optician checked my sight, my eye pressure and recommended an eye mask that one pops in the microwave for 30 seconds to watt, place over the eyes for 5 minutes twice a day then gently massage.

She had no concerns and after a thorough eye check and paying £20 neither have I today.

I have dry eyes, blepharitis and a history of inflammatory eye disease. All linked to RA

Recently my eyes been so dry, sore and itchy. The pharmacist recommended the eye cream for infected eyes. When that didn’t help, said see the GP. Seen the same day, referred to eye unit. Eye unit phoned, said see my independent optician who could do more thorough test than GP and decide if I needed the eye unit

Optician great. Knows my eyes well. Said both eye lids infected, to use a hot damp cloth four times a day, minimum five minutes. Use prescription moisturising cream in eyes overnight, eye drops frequently. I’m now using the moisture cloth twice a day - regime for life 😟

It's a waste of time going to the doctor with eye problems, they have no equipment. Google to find your local CUES opticians (in our town Specsavers and Boots). This is Community Urgent Eye Service. They will give you an appointment usually same day or the next. They have all the necessary equipment to examine your eye thoroughly. If necessary they will refer you urgently to the eye clinic at the hospital. The first time I used this service, the hospital phoned me with an appointment for the same day as I was going out of the optician's door! CUES is an NHS service. It is FREE.

I’ve struggled with itchy and irritated eyes/eyelids on and off for years now. Was referred to eye hospital years ago who diagnosed blepharitis but tbh none of the suggested treatments have really helped long term. It seems to come and go with no obvious trigger. I’ve got drops which sometimes alleviate it to some extent. Out of interest what is the prescription moisturising cream you use Iam64?

I’m out and will put the name on when I get home granny queeny, it’s helped. I’ve now accepted eye lid hygiene and hot damp cloth at least twice a day is needed

Thanks Littleannie for the CUES reference, that’s where the eye unit asked me to go. My optician is registered CUES so it worked well

My optician is also CUES registered. Means she can prescribe and refer to a hospital if necessary.

Our daughter registered with her last year as Specsavers didn’t provide this extra level of service.

The small independent opticians are excellent

I have blepharitis. It’s difficult or nearly impossible to eradicate. I use the warm eye mask when it flares up. Leave on for 10 minutes and then gently massage the eyelids whilst closed. Finish by cleaning each eye with a wet cotton wool pad. Different one for each eye. Takes a few days to settle and then goes away -until the next time. Strangely as I type I realise I have been rubbing my eye quite a bit today so will get the eye mask back out!

FGT Whilst Specsavers don't prescribe, they can and do refer people to hospital clinics. They referred me to an eye specialist a couple of years ago.

grannyqueeny, it’s HYLO night cream. I’ve found it helps but only use it after you’ve stopped reading in bed as it blurs sight slightly
