Tell him why his so-called "good teeth" are making your life a misery. Here's the script:

All your bottom teeth hurt; you have generalised pain in all your bottom gums. It's so hard to eat. The pain is keeping you awake at night, lack of sleep and constant pain are having a terrible effect on your general well being. You're spending a fortune on painkillers that don't help.

Therefore you would like a full lower extraction and lower denture.

Sorry to drop this randomly here. I am new,and I thought I had been posting, but I think I maybe wasn't logged on. I will learn :-). I wanted to say that it's possible to have one or two new teeth added to a partial denture,I think

You should be able to have a partial denture if the remaining unbroken teeth are sound. With a lower denture it's better to have some teeth to stabilise the denture, otherwise it will be more liable to move around and give you grief. So don't be in too much of a hurry to get rid of all of your lower teeth.

EllieW Sadly going private is not an option for me financially otherwise I’d definitely do it & I agree erring on the side of caution re ‘Turkey teeth’

I’ve bitten the bullet so to speak and am going to a private dentist in Borehamwood to have individual implants where I have missing teeth. It’s the cheapest I’ve found ( apart from Turkey which I’m not willing to risk) at £1600 per implant. They do finance plans. I’m fed up with not being able to eat certain foods ( it’s not vanity, the missing teeth are at the back and won’t really be seen.)

Just a thought - if you have a university dental school near you, they often provide free or low cost dental care to train their students (supervised by very experienced dentists).

(Sorry about the random letters at the end - I’m on a train and went over a bumpy bit!)

My mum’s NHS dentist just kept extracting her teeth with no apparent plan for how she was going to eat!
I got her to go to a private dentist - it was expensive, but teeth were filled and stabilised sufficiently to hold partial denture.
My mum still has a really good appetite at 91 and it was distressing to see her have to avoid things she enjoyed eating.

You can explain with having so few teeth left you have nothing to chew with and you find it difficult to eat. Havibg only 4 + the root is surely justification for all being extracted and denture fitted.A dentist should address this issue. Good luck.

I’ve got to make an appointment tomorrow and Yes he will deal with probably extracting it, but that will leave me with another gap between my remaining teeth which looks horrendous and I want to have the remainder removed t.oo and wear a denture, I know they are not ideal and obviously don’t work as well as your natural teeth but having teeth looking akin to Stonehenge is very depressing

Sorry didn't mean to laugh but the Stonehenge reference made ne laugh out loud

Lupatria, you know that you can have a tooth added to the partial denture instead of having a whole new plate?

Lupatria Tue 30-Sept-25 14:16:50

you can have a partial denture for the lower set of teeth - i know as i have one. my teeth have always needed lots of attention since a dentist in my childhood filled every tooth in my head even if it didn't need it - he was paid for every filling he did!
after lockdown i had to have many teeth extracted and i was left with 4 teeth in my bottom jaw plus one which was levelled to my gum [it was dead]. i alreafy had a full denture "on top".
so my new dentist made a partial denture which was aesthetically pleasing and meant i had no gaps. however last christmas one of my 4 remaining teeth had to be extracted which means i now have a gap.
i will stay with a gap until my other teeht need extracting before i have a full plate made.

Surely you can ask for extractions if you want that?
Could you ask to be referred to a Dental hospital?
I was once when my own NHS dentist didn't have the equipment/skill necessary to save a tooth.
It was saved at the hospital.

Could you afford to go to a private dentist.
I think NHS ones are limited in what they can do.

Surely your dentist will deal with this damaged tooth?

DeeAitch56 Sun 28-Sept-25 17:29:41

I’ve always had poor quality teeth despite regular brushing etc, probably due the poor nutrition in childhood and late onset Type 2 diabetes.
Currently I have an almost full top denture, but it’s my lower pallette that is the problem
I only have 6 teeth left (plus a lower molar ground down to gum level) with gaps between some of the teeth, I’ve just bitten something hard and I think I’ve broken (at gum level) another one of my teeth it’s being kept in place by the teeth either side of it, I’m loath to pull it out of place in case it exposes roots and pain, ironically it’s the only tooth out of the ones I have left that wasn’t previously chipped or filled
It’s now getting harder to eat as well as not being aesthetically pleasing and being embarrassed by them
I’m fortunate to have an NHS dentist but he so far has refused to take my remaining teeth out ‘whilst they are still good’ do any of you good people know of anyway I can insist they are extracted or if there is a cut off point in the number I have left that they will do so
