Burning mouth syndrome

My sister has suffered very badly for almost 20 years, since her husband died. She's prescribed amitripyline tablets which help somewhat. It never goes completely.

I have and this on and off for 10+ yrs I’ve tried lots of things nothing works it comes and goes. It’s very annoying but now I know it dies down I just tolerate it for however long it decides to annoy me. A junior doctor who was shadowing my GP said she’d studied it for a test and most experts couldn’t find a definitive reason why people develop it or find a cure that works for everyone sounded about right.

Im sorry you are struggling with this too. How long have you been suffering with it?

Thanks, my GP doesn’t seem to know what the issue is. I’ve been to see her a number of times because of mouth discomfort in recent months and she thinks I have become hyper aware and prescribed an antidepressant, but that has made my mouth very dry. My saliva is sticky and feels wrong as well as tingling in my mouth and tongue. She is referring me to an ear nose and throat specialist.

Acid reflux causes mine. My tongue will also develop cracks. You can have silent reflux whereby you don’t have the heartburn but have symptoms like a burning mouth, sore throat and a hoarse voice. Maybe check with your GP?

Hi yes I have this, it started with the menopause and is still going on now aged 68. Initially I referred to my local dental hospital where I had a full mouth examination and blood tests all came back normal.
I’ve never found anything that helps, I drink a lot of very cold water and eat an ice lolly every evening.
