While I detest onions I really like garlic.

J52 = re your Grandma's cure for coughs etc. My Dad, was very much into 'natural medicine', many, many years before it became fashionable. As I child (I was born in 1941), an irratble cough at night, preventing sleep and he would warm up a cup (no mugs back then) of milk, and add in a good dollop of butter, which he would then spoon feed to me... I know I loved that TLC, but this remedy always worked - and obviously it would when you think about the ingredients on my throat.
Then there was his all-in cure for any long term cough/cold - a large onion, cut in half and liberally sprinkled with brown sugar and left a day. The ensuing syrup was then given to the sufferer. I would say, I detested this and just the smell of it was usually quite enough to set me on the road to recovery..

Is this a joke (or worse). You are not a doctor. Such posts may be dangerous.

ONION
Contain fructans, chains of fermentable sugar that are difficult for your body to break down and absorb. Fructans are a FODMAP. Eating them can lead to greater amounts of water and gas in your intestines, which may result in classic IBS symptoms like bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea, fatigue, exhaustion, psychological distress, and health-related impacts on quality of life.

I’ve got gastritis, and the first sign of it was pain when I ate raw onions. I don’t eat onions at all now unless they can’t be removed from the dish. Leeks and garlic don’t affect me, only onions.

They and garlic were a staple food for the Roman Legions. Gwyllt I too love cheese and onion sandwiches!

Absolutely loathe and detest onions, and their cousins leeks. Pity as both are supposed to be good for us.

Gwyllt Sat 11-Oct-25 15:48:25

Cheese and onion sandwiches

I think I'll stick with leek and potato soup!

Leeks are just as bad🤭

pably15 Sat 11-Oct-25 15:23:33

They certainly clear the digestive system of wind!

😂 that’s why I avoid them at all costs.

I love onions. If anyone had a cold, my Granny would cut a huge Spanish onion ( we don’t see them now? ) in half and leave it cut side down in a shallow bowl where the juice would gather. Then she would give the person with the cold a teaspoon of the juice from time to time. I remember it being sweet and not at all oniony. I have no idea if it did you any good or not.

Not if you’ve got IBS. One of the various triggers for it. Such a shame as I loved onions!

I had my flu and Covid jabs on Thursday and I still feel a bit ill. I must eat lots of onions, leeks and chives. I have chives growing in my windowbox so I'll get snipping.

I often have an onion, cooked in the microwave, with a knob of butter and a sprinkle of pepper, until soft. Delicious!

Esmay

The Allium family are extremely beneficial to your health.
Whoever I feel unwell I eat as much onion and garlic in fresh soups as I can .
I had my flu jab on Friday
The nurse said that my arm would be heavy.
It wasn't.
But the next day I was hot and my chest ached .
I slept for hours and I drank as much soup as I could.

I have my flu jab next week, I'll remember that.

Are leeks beneficial too?

Allira Sat 11-Oct-25 14:21:11

henetha Sat 11-Oct-25 13:48:11

My mum always said that onions clean the blood. Could it be true?

Esmay Sat 11-Oct-25 13:46:34

Oops -I meant flu jab on Thursday .
I lose track of the days sometimes.
Drank my magic soup on Friday and I'm better today!

LizzieDrip Sat 11-Oct-25 13:26:17

Yes Babs some of the strong cheese & onion ones disagree with me too (although I do love them). Walkers tend to be OK - perhaps their onions are the healthy ones🤣🤣🤣

Oh I wish I could eat more of them but have GERD and they disagree with me.

LizzieDrip Sat 11-Oct-25 13:15:32

Does that work the same for cheese and onion crisps🤣

HowVeryDareYou2 Sat 11-Oct-25 12:48:14

I love roasted onions
