Ramipril raising potassium and affecting kidneys

Dh has serious heart failure and is on Bisoprolol and Spironolactone. Although he was near the top of the permitted potassium levels he was put on Ramipril about 2 months ago. They were talking about increasing it but now blood tests show raised potassium levels affecting kidney function and he has been told to stop taking it altogether and go back for another blood test in a week’s time. There don’t seem to be any suggestions about what other medication he could have or how to reduce potassium apart from drinking more water. Has any one else experienced this and got any advice please?

There are other options and I expect they will look at those.

Thinking of you.
It's not good to be anxious - hope it's resolved soon.

Yes, I was prescribed it but it didn't suit me.

Hi MayBee70 I went through my GP & was referred to the local hospital as I have Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, amongst other things.
I am monitored 4 times a year now, sticking to a Mediterranean diet minus this list-

I do have more problems in Winter, as I have more tinned soups etc. I’m dabbling with boiling fresh/frozen mixed veg, draining & rinsing, then adding that to the soup (matching weight for weight to double the quantity) then the soup nutrition levels are ‘diluted’! Makes 3 meals for me with bread or, if chunky enough, rice or pasta. Different spices and herbs, adding lentils/dhal, shiitake mushrooms (whole, sliced thin-ish & stirfried) to ring a few changes 🙂

Hi Nannan2, maybe cut down on bananas if your potassium is a bit high, or do ‘1 week on, 1 week off’ and see how you feel.
It would be a good idea to discuss your medication with your heart specialist, s/he may have some ideas to lower your bp.
Epilepsy Meds do interact with other meds and herbal supplements- my late husband had an awful time on Tegretol and far fewer problems after changing to Epilim (Sodium Valproate).

I was on 10mg Atorvastatin between 1984-2019 for high cholesterol (only had to move up to 20mg in 2019 when I had a near-fatal medical episode). It seems to work well for me, possibly because I’m mostly vegetarian, and eat a bit of chicken once in a while. Still partial to prawns, though! 😁

Ramipril can be a dangerous drug. I took for 4-5 days and started worst cough possible which stopped me sleeping and caused chronic chest infections 3 x times. Never had those before or since. The 24 hr cough lasted 15 months and now, 12 years later, I am still unable to sleep without drugs.

So whats the verdict? Eat bananas or not? I do like bananas.I would hate to give them up altogether.

Years ago I worked with long term dialysis patients and also on renal transplant unit.

The first thing patients asked for post-transplant were bananas and bacon sandwiches, as they hadn't been allowed to eat them before!

This was quite a few years ago though so advice may have changed. Itis entirely up to you whether you do without them altogether or not... but if I was in renal failure I wouldn't eat them, but bacon would be hard to do without all together!

This works for my mum too. She was really not drinking enough, but finds it hard to drink cold water. Warm water does the trick for her. You can always flavour it with a slice of lemon, or even a splash of cordial. Warm blackcurrant is nice.

Sorry - lost MayBee70’s quote
Have you tried drinking hot water? I felt I wasn’t drinking enough water but started having a mug of hot water in the morning and evening and am quite enjoying it.

Hot instead of cold water is a good idea. Even better with some fizzy Fanta added to it.

I’m a bit stressed at the moment so I’ve been adding a few drops of Rescue Remedy to it! I also don’t get indigestion as much. I want to add lemon but it makes my teeth a bit sensitive.
