Inhalation sedation for Dental extraction.

I had nitrous for an extraction when my anxiety was through the roof and it worked well enough to keep me calm. You stay aware, but your body feels lighter and the panic switches off which makes the whole thing easier to handle. The numbing did the heavy lifting for pain, and the nitrous helped me stay steady until it was done.

Hi Cossy and Yogitree
Thank you both so much for your reassuring responses.
I am feeling a little more confident now, that the NO will be sufficient to calm my fear and panic.

Hi Rosie
Many thanks for your kind response.
Hopefully, you are right, and all will go well on the day!!!!
I have suffered Dental Anxiety since childhood in Poland, and have yet to meet a Dentist who can erase the awful memories of 1950's Dental Surgery.
I will let you know how everything pans out.
Take care and God bless.

I had 50's dental 'care' in Glasgow in the 50's. Nightmare! Left with severe dental treatment anxiety. What I do know is that Nitrous Oxide and a sedative tablet will do the job. My experiences with NO during childbirth was amazing - sedatives not even necessary as I was 'flying'! I have a great dentist now who is very gentle and caring and gives regard to my lived experience previously.

Good luck and yes I’ve had and felt so good it didn’t matter what was being done to me!

Had plenty of it during the birth of my two children and also when I dislocated my thumb wonderful stuff makes you high as a kite
It will relax you obviously they won't use it for pain relief the local anaesthetic will take care of that.
I was a nervous dental patient but have an excellent dentist who can administer local anaesthetic without me even feeling it. I have had numerous filings, root fillings and extractions without feeling anything the only scary bit is his bill.
The gas and air will work on your anxiety if you relax and go with it and take plenty of deep inhalations.
The thought is far worse than the actual experience.

Hello Ladies
Some of you may remember, that around Christmas 2024, I completely broke a front tooth, from the root.
I had a 1- tooth denture fitted without extracting the root.
I suffered a few abscesses in the retained tooth, and due to severe Dental Anxiety, was referred to hospital to have the root removed.
My appointment is imminent, and the only form of sedation offered to me is Nitrous Oxide, as I have very high BP and can not have Intravenous Sedation, which I would have preferred.
Does anyone have experience of Inhalation Sedation for a tricky extraction, and was it sufficient for anxiety and pain relief?
I look forward to any responses.
Thank you.
