I have a hole in my left macular which they are leaving to see if it gets any worse my brain has adjusted my sight so I don’t have any problems now although at one time when reading, the words were on two different levels 🤣
I don’t want the op unless really necessary because of the lying down business I think it would do my head in to be lying face down it used to be two weeks…. how long is it for now ?

I had one about 10 years ago now. My sight in that eye improved slowly and is now almost normal. I have an intraocular lens . After the op I had a cataract which is quite common but that was successfully removed. The worst thing for me was lying face down and I surfaced a bit too early which is probably why my sight now isn’t 100%.

I had a macular hole in my left eye 15 years ago,it was diagnosed here in the Isle of man but i had to go to Liverpool for my consultation and i had my surgery 4 weeks later in st Pauls eye unit in the Royal hospital in Liverpool i didnt have to pay the Isle of man health service covered the cost also my travel costs. The surgery was successful.
I never bought any special pillows but i did buy a massage chair to use during the day so i could be face down.Idid get a cataract in that eye a year later which they said that would happen and that was successfully treated in my local hospital.I hope you get a good outcome.

Had vitrectomy for macular hole a week ago. Would be interested in hearing other people's experience of this. In particular did anyone find a face down support pillow that was actually comfortable enough to sleep with? I bought two, but after half an hour both felt like instruments of torture!

I had the op done privately since my 'urgent' referral on the NHS had a waiting list of 12 weeks just for the initial consultation so heaven knows how long the op would have taken. It was already classed as a large hole - I would have been terrified at having to wait as it grew even larger!

Happy to report the experience with the private surgeon was great. I was given mild IV sedation and the whole process was done and dusted in about 40 minutes. I had complete confidence in the team. I was sent home with 3 lots of eye drops (my husband kindly drew out a grid so I could keep track of which ones to use when which I highly recommend). Just waiting on the 2 week follow up now, after which there's one at 2 months by which time the gas bubble should have dissolved.

Then I can do the whole procedure all over again with the other eye!!
