Weird episode

This afternoon I experienced a weird and frightening experience . My sight went blurred as though I had been looking at a bright light. This passed fairly quickly. About 15 minutes later I was talking to a friend on the phone when suddenly I knew what I wanted to say but couldn't get the right words or remember who people were.
It passed but I was left feeling disorientated.
Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Mazgg - at least, you know there’s a name for your symptoms

That’s good to know Mazgg. My migraines are more ‘with aura’ now. From the age of five or six I had the full blown exceedingly painful ones which painkillers didn’t touch. Then in my 40s triptans were developed. As soon as the visual disturbances begin I take a table and generally with half an hour I’m ok, albeit a little washed out. It’s always good to get a diagnosis with this sort of thing. A friend of mine started having migraines in her 30s and was convinced she was having a stroke.

My mum lost her eyesight for a few seconds then it came back. She was later diagnosed with extremely high blood sugar, hospitalised and diagnosed with diabetes type 2. See your GP ASAP OP

Mazgg

I wrote a message yesterday but it seems to have disappeared. I have been diagnosed with aural migraine because the events didn't all happen once. Hopefully won't happen again.

Good to have a diagnosis. 🙂

Glad you got to see someone.
🤞

I couldn't get an appointment today but have taken a low dose aspirin as a precaution. I'm feeling absolutely fine but will let you all know tomorrow what has been said.
Once again thank you all for your concern and good wishes.

I hope you have gone to A&E, or GP who has alerted the acute stroke service for advice?

JPB123 Wed 14-Jan-26 20:52:15

I had a TIA and it was how you described. That was a year ago and I’m fine.On blood thinners and blood pressure meds. Take care.

GrammaH Wed 14-Jan-26 20:45:33

I really hope the OP went to the GP or to A and E. Something like this happened to me some years ago - I had had a TIA .

Madgran77 Wed 14-Jan-26 18:22:01

Mazgg have you managed to see your GP yet. I think you need an urgent appointment to be on the safe side. If you havent, I suggest you ring 111 and ask for advice 💐

Lots of advice, so nothing to add.
Just wanted to wish you well.
Please, if possible let us know how you are. flowers

Where did Leasing come from??? Should have been Lèmsip. Autocorrect is on overtime for some reason.

HelterSkelter1 Wed 14-Jan-26 16:23:39

Leasing. Sometimes other comments appear unbeknownst to you while you are typing your comment.

Is there an update from the OP yet? I hope she was able to see her GP.

lemsip Wed 14-Jan-26 15:41:55

a shame people don't read latest comments before adding their own!!

KnittyNannie Wed 14-Jan-26 15:39:30

Sounds very like migraine to me but, especially if you don’t normally get migraines, get checked out by your GP.

HelterSkelter1 Wed 14-Jan-26 15:08:56

How did you get on with your GP OP? How very frightening for you.

Esmay Wed 14-Jan-26 14:57:37

This sounds like a classic TIA .
I had one when pregnant and I was absolutely terrified.
Luckily the doctor next door checked me ,but I still had to go to the hospital.

I was on bed rest for a week .

It was okay.

Please-take some food and drink and a nice friend and go straight to
A and E and get it checked out .
Thinking of you ,
Hugs,
Esmay .

I agree with those who have said contact your GP asap. If you can't get an immediate appt then I would ring 111 or go to A&E. Hopefully it's nothing serious but on the other hand it could be and needs investigating. Take care.

My hairdresser, a youngish man had something similar recently. Went to A&E, diagnosed with migraine and told to rest. It took him days to recover. They said they’ve had a lot of people with this recently.

Yes I had these episodes over a few years, not frequently but about twice a year. Not the speech problem. I mentioned it to the GP and he checked my eyes and said it was probably migraine. I even had an eye test at the optician and was told the same thing but I never had a headache.
Eventually I started having tia's but I didn't know what was wrong. Eventually I mentioned these different symptoms to the GP and was sent for Cardiology tests. I was eventually diagnosed with a heart condition and I'm now taking a lot of medication. I hope you are diagnosed soon and they find out what's causing your problems. All the best flowers

I'm 63 now and this happened to me just once about 8 years ago, I went to bed as normal and then woke up 2am and didn't know who I was. I felt strongly there were people in the house who could help me, so I went downstairs in a horrible panic thinking I must find someone. (now ex)H was in the kitchen he gave me an aspirin just in case, I think the whole episode must have lasted 5 minutes? I couldn't remember my children or who he was initially. Awful experience but I was under incredible stress at the time so I put it down to some sort of "temporary absence". You do need to ask the GP but just to reassure you this sort of thing does happen and it might not mean anything.
