Does anyone else have restless legs, and how do you cope?

A side effect of my chronic kidney disease is restless legs. It's debilitating, and when it starts off, it prevents me from sleeping. At present I am taking 2 magnesium tablets and using magnesium cream. Something it helps, but not always.

Does anyone else suffer from this, and what is your remedy, if you have found one?

I know my other half has had it years and his mum but she swore by Anadin no idea why! my other half drinks tonic water. i have started with it recently and it is the most annoying thing ever

Ive had rls for 45 years in both arms and legs and have tried just about all of the recommended medications and most supplements. In the end I was relieved by using an opiod. Codeine which my GP prescribed. Its possible to buy the lowest dose cocodamol 8/500mg over the counter. This is 8mg codeine and 500mg paracetamol..

My DH is also on pramipexole for RLS that works very well we definitelyknow if hes missed taking it ! . I have read of some success for people putting thir feet on a vibration plate for a few minutes before bed.

I used to get it occasionally but following a hip replacement surgery, it became constant. Have been on Pramiprexole medication from my doctor ever since.

I suffer dreadfully with Restless legs and even have prescribed meds for it, which eases it but as they make you drowsy I can only take them at night.
It has got worse since I got older, sometimes one side sometimes both at the same time which drives me mad!
I can't take Quinine because of my heart medications. Sometimes Its so bad I'm in tears.
I've had this since I was in my twenties but it's much worse now. I get it during the day as well as at night. As a previous poster said, flights can be a nightmare as can cinema visits etc.
One weekend when I was completely out of my RLS meds I couldn't get my prescription as the pharmacist had been called out on an emergency.
I barely slept for the whole weekend and felt dreadful,
Sometimes I do 500 -1000 steps in the house to try to alleviate it .
Of all my various conditions it causes me more stress than any of the other things
GP just not interested. I can honestly say of all my various medical conditions this causes me the most stress, I wouldn't wish it on anyone else.

I have hesitated to join this thread but hope what I say will help others. I have only recently had restless legs and am sure in my case at least it is psychological. I never had it before I heard of it. I got advice and now focus on not trying to 'cure ' it but on training my brain to 'go somewhere else'. So I visualise e.g. a place we went on holiday, or sunflowers, or anything which occurs to me. I do not try for instance to relax my body. The important thing is to avoid 'telling' my brain that this is something it should pay attention to. I know this may be counterintuitive but it has worked for me. Occasional returns but I do the distraction strategy again. This is why I nearly did not write this post - do not want to pay this too much attention. But I am writing this in the hope it helps others and now will not look at the thread again. I wish you well.

When sitting in my armchair I put my feet flat on the floor and then raise and lower my heels for at leastc10 minutes at regular intervals. This has significantly reduced tthe amount of problems I had with restless legs. If it starts I immediately sit and do the same again for at least 10 minutes or longer.

Drink tonic water. Quinine is a cure for restless legs.

I’ve had RLS on and off for years and tried everything mentioned on here except the Rhys Tox, so will def give that a try. My daughter bought me gel sheets that you put in the fridge and that instant ice cold on my calf’s, it hurts but omg does it work straight away, taking the heat away. I too dread plane journeys, cinema, theatre etc and do all I can to get a seat on the end of rows so that I can get up asap as soon as it starts. Had several blood tests and all is ok, but obviously RLS is a mystery, no medics know why it starts and there is no cure. I’m going to the theatre on Saturday and I will have to take 2 paracetamol before the show starts, otherwise RLS will just ruin the whole night for me.

My sister has a horrible time with restless legs at night. It turned out she was anaemic and needed iron tablets. Might be worth asking your doctor to check your iron levels.

I have chronic kidney disease and I had no idea that my restless legs were a symptom!
It drives me mad and they’re so painful.
I already take magnesium, not working so far ☹️

I did suffer with them some time ago.

I got an online appointment with a g.p. And was prescribed Quinine tablets.
I continued taking them for about a month and haven’t had the problem since.

I read somewhere that some cases of restless legs are due to dehydration. I keep small cans of diet tonic water in my bedside cabinet. If my legs start to become restless I drink one and they settle down within minutes. I also find a drink of water helps.

I suffered terribly but did a bit of research and most suggested magnesium. I don’t generally like taking supplements preferring to try and eat a balanced diet but was getting desperate and didn’t want to bother my GP! Within two weeks of starting magnesium the problem was solved. 18 months later and no more restless legs 👍

I find mine is worse when iv had a bit of chocolate in the evening.
I have to get up..walk around a bit. have a warm drink..maybe do a bit of ironing.

My husband had it for years, til I googled it and told him to add epson salts or magnesium flakes to his bath. He hasn't had it since except when he runs out of the magnesium.

Rhus Tox tablets usually work for me too. I bought them from Amazon for a few pounds.
The worst times for me are on flights.

DH was recommended to use Rhus Tox (Holland and Barratt). It helped him, but worked wonders for his sister.
