Potential Danger from Button Batteries

Yes button batteries and any of the coin batteries are dangeruos if swallowed, we have a box on the kitchen window sill that we put them.

There is a warning on the battery pack.

The dangers of button batteries and children/pets have been well know for years. There are warnings on the packets and I’m pretty sure my Dh was told about them when he got hearing aids.

We did have a scare when a battery went missing in my DD’s house and the possibility arose that my GD might have swallowed it. The A&E department scanned her with a wand like they use at airports and fortunately found nothing. Istr the battery was found in the pile on a hairy rug they have.

I had a home visit today from an NHS hearing aid tester and fitter. His work was excellent until ,just as he was leaving .I saw he'd placed two old batteries loose on a small table top where they could have so easily fallen on to the floor. The man already knew I have a dog. Fortunately I saw them.I picked them up saying I'd put them away safely in a closed contained.
I have emailed the firm concerned to say they should advise and instruct about safe handling of batteries.

Hearing aid tests at home are most often for old people who may have visiting children , or a dog. I am shocked at the carelessness.

One of my toddler DGC needed an xray when his dad found him riffling through a drawer where there had been batteries.

Thankfully all was well but they played safe.

Button batteries are a hazard, but one it's difficult to avoid. Rechargeable hearing aids are safer I suppose, but if you forget, you can't hear the next day.

The thing that annoys me are the magnetic ball-bearing sculptures. Magnetic ball bearings are really dangerous to small children, if they ingest more than one. Do we really need magnet sculptures? Yet they're freely on sale.

Drip-feeding information warrants a different response. Yes, the audiologist was wrong to not dispose of the batteries safely.

A few years my friend was walking with her hearing impaired daughter round grandfather’s farm, she stopped to look at the pigs and her hearing aid fell out on the floor, a pig ate it and sadly died. It has made me ultra careful with my son’s hearing aids!

My parents had Button/flat style batteries in their doorbell that needed replacing.
I said I would sort it out for them so just popped both the old ones in my top pocket of the shirt I was wearing, so I could get the correct ones.
On driving home with DH, they must have rubbed together, and they went bang! Frightened the life out of me, also luckily didn't catch fire! They did singe the inside of the pocket but more so I was glad I wasn't driving.

As already mentioned beware of toys etc with small magnets.
Also anything like beads that expand in water.
If ingested any of these as well as batteries can cause serious harm.
