Have you tried magnesium tablets to aid sleep ? I’m considering trying them.

Yes, though it was a powder added to water or fruit juice, for me this works, though I don’t use it every night.

I think they are called Calms and are not cheap, my daughter gave me some sachets to try as they worked for her.

There are three kinds of magnesium and I can’t remember which is the one to aid sleep. I do take a couple of magnesium tablets at night but they’re just Boots magnesium and don’t say which kind.

I take magnesium glycinate it is for restless legs and sleep. I do find it helps.

I tried it for sleep and it made things worse unfortunately so have stopped taking it. My sleep is better without it - apparently it has this effect on some people.

I use magnesium crystals in the bath sometimes. I don’t know if they help or not, but the lavender scented ones are pleasant and relaxing.

Yes.. Works a treat for me and I give to DH after he broke his Pelvis just before Christmas and he had trouble sleeping.
I don't take in the evening but mid morning or lunchtime.
I went to Holland and Barrett who gave me the right type of Magnesium, I had been on meds known for disturb nights and got into an awful sleep routine. I can't believe how good they are. I take most days but often miss.
I do know from my chum who is a GP Practice manager, this is what the GP's advise, no prescription pills until all else fails.

I think it’s important to take the right kind of magnesium for you. It does help me, but I take it for energy; when I don’t take it I do feel more weary.

I use magnesium butter, which I massage into my skin as I’m getting ready for bed. My favourite is Neom, as it smells lovely too.

I’m afraid that though I’ve been taking magnesium for almost 2 years it has not helped my sleep at all.

However, it has helped my rapid and sometimes erratic heart rate hugely (trigemony, diagnosed after a 48 hour heart scan). so I take it for that reason alone. I was prescribed beta blockers which made me feel terrible do stopped before long.

Do you have low magnesium? I wouldn't take any supplements unless I really needed them.

Month ago my DD recommended some sleepy stories that helped her sleep problems- so I tired them and have never looked back.

I get mine on spotify and wouldn't be without them now- I just listen in and within minutes I'm off to the land of nod.

I rarely have a bad night now.

I don’t think magnesium is something that you can overdose on and it’s something that aids the absorption of other vitamins and minerals. I’ll always remember seeing a documentary in which someone was in a really bad way but made a sort of miracle recovery after being given magnesium. I think it’s something that it’s easy to be deficient in but is very important.

MayBee70 Fri 06-Mar-26 20:13:21

Magnesium deficiency is common in hospitalized patients. Up to 12% of all people admitted to hospital, and as high as 60–65% of people in an intensive care unit (ICU), have hypomagnesemia.[12]

“About 57% of the US population does not meet the US RDA for dietary magnesium intake.[13] Kidneys are very efficient at maintaining body levels; however, if the diet is deficient, or certain medications such as diuretics or proton pump inhibitors are used,[14] or in chronic alcoholism,[15] levels may drop”.
From wikipedia
Interesting that it mentions ppi’s as so many people are on them. When I worked at a surgery I couldn’t keep enough of them as they were so heavily prescribed.

I have a magnesium spray which I massage onto my legs and sends me to sleep in 15 minutes. Never fails.

there are different sorts of magnesium and they have different effects on the body, this is quite well explained here:

Magnesium glycinate is the one which relaxes the muscles and body and helps with sleep. I take this form and it works for me. I buy the brand sold by Nutrition Geeks.

I take Magnesium Glycinate and it has definitely helped me to get better sleep.
I also read relaxing books in bed and that makes me drowsy.
The last one was The Marmalade Diary’s, a lovely book.
