Walking pads

I came across an article on a website aimed at seniors about the benefits of walking pads (a lighter, more compact version of a treadmill). I had never heard of them before, but with all the wet weather we have had they seem like a good way to keep the legs moving when it is too wet to go for a walk. Anyone had any experience of these?

My daughter has one and yes, it is like a compact treadmill.
Beware though: they are narrower than a treadmill so not so good if you are in any way unsteady, and some have nothing to hold on to.

I bought mine after my niece recommended hers. It is very easy to use and move as it has tiny wheels on one end. I then stand it up behind the bedroom door. Ideal for me anyway. Mine does not have anything to hold on to but I manage OK. I’d just like a little more time to use it.

I would like one as I think it will slide under our sofa- I don’t know though if I would be steady enough with rails to hang on to.

Excellent idea (IMHO). Hate having to dress, organise a time/a route, avoid incredible heat (in our summers), awful rain and storms this winter, uneven surfaces and actually regularly find the time! We all need to walk but it's a good feeling to know that the essential exercise can be done easily and regularly with other outings then being a bonus.

I agree that the lack of handles/supports on a small piece of equipment (much neater than a treadmill) can feel a bit off-putting, but with something that slides under a sofa, which can be used any time day or night it's worth persevering at the beginning if you feel a bit unsteady. Mine slides out and is switched right across the front of a sofa (of course, something to land on in an emergency!) and I put the back of a heavy wooden chair next to my other side which I can rest a hand on whilst walking if I need. No drama to date!

Mine programmes time, distances, calories, speed, is quiet and operated by a remote. It's used a lot, and although a very different experience compared with the treadmill I had in a big old house with lots of space, it's perfect for our needs.......and just works.

I bought one of those in January, living in snow covered Ontario I was missing getting out for a walk. I found myself feeling quite wobbly as it’s quite narrow. Even with a handle for support it didn’t feel very secure. One day as I was walking on it the safety key which was clipped onto my t shirt got caught up on my arm somehow. The machine stopped dead but I was catapulted backwards off the machine landing on my butt and fracturing my tail bone.Got rid of it the next day! I can get just as much walking exercise at home by following the many you tube videos. One in particular that I really like is a lady called Jules.Google her, she has lots to choose from.

Thanks for the replies. I'll take a look at those YouTube videos before committing to a walking pad.

You could try putting a dining chair either side of your walker so you can hold onto the backs of them.

lizzypopbottle what an excellent idea

I bought a walking pad from Amazon a couple of months ago. I’m quite fit and thought it would be very beneficial. However, there was no handle or anything to steady me. I felt quite insecure and ended up falling off twice!!!! I packed it up and returned it.

Madwoman11 I'm glad you like it 😎

I have one, bought it in January as weather was raining majority of the time and missed going for my runs. I got one with a handle, it’s ok, only drawback it’s heavier than I expected even with a couple wheels, it lives under the settee when not in use and bit of a bind pulling it out, but it has been handy.

I get a lot of walking just going from one end of the house to the other to try to remember why I was going there in the first place smile

We have one mainly for my husband who has reduced mobility due to osteoarthritis in his hip. He tried two chairs either side but they were not quite high enough so has now taken to using two walking poles with rubber feet on the ends that we had in the house and can adjust to any height so he feels more stable.
Both my daughters have them and use when working from home.

I've not come across them, sounds I teresring.
I just looked in Amazon and a recommended one comes with these warnings which are quite intriguing. I want to know who sells clothing with pockets big enough to carry them in!
Warning:Do not aim at eyes or face.

Warning:Do not carry loose in a pocket.

Warning:Do not fire near eyes.

Warning:Not suitable for children under 14 years. For use under adult supervision

Warning:Protective equipment should be worn. Not to be used in traffic

Warning:Risk of falling or tipping.

Warning:Strangulation hazard.

I have one, which has a handle (foldable) and wheels at one end so you can move it around. It doesn't have an incline facility, but I wouldn't use it anyway.

Mine measures the speed you are walking at, the distance you have covered, the calories you have burned, the number of steps you have taken, and how long you have been walking for.

I have mine permanently set up in a corner of the dining room, as I just know that if I had to get it out each time I use it, I'd not bother. I pop on it for five minutes here and there throughout the day, and I've definitely noticed my fitness level improving.

I bought mine from the TikTok shop and I think I paid around £90 for it.

There is an app you can download, and you can choose various walks to show on screen whilst you are walking - I particularly like walking through forests smile
