I paid privately for the Uromune vaccine. It was about £500 two years ago.
It worked.
My dad still cooks better than me and he's 71

If so has vagirux pessaries helped. Ever since the end of last year I have had one uti after another. Seems to clear up but an either one or two weeks later I get another. I was given Vagirux a couple of weeks ago. I am now feeling so depressed and just waiting for the next one as I have read that it takes up to 16 weeks for any help to prevent more utis. My dd keeps telling me I need to see a urologist. I am almost 85 and had vaginal atrophy for over twenty years. I certainly can’t hold my wee for any length of time for a scan which I had some years ago. I am depressed as hell over the situation as I can’t plan anything as just waiting for another uti which come out of the blue. I know I will have to ask for an appt with a doctor to discuss this properly.

See a urologist. My incontinence has diminished to the occasional sneeze. Not using pads helped a great deal.
But people do focus on bladder, but a friend suggested to me that fixing her diet and her bowel issues reduced her UTIs
Exactly this, GP’s are not good at advising, I did my research and literally changed my life.
I could barely mange 20 minutes without going to the loo.
I can now do a 3/4 hour car journey without a stop.
It’s diet, not having a full colon and getting off the vicious cycle of antibiotics.

I’ve been prescribed Hiprex but have been unable to obtain it as there is a manufacturing problem and it is not available. Has anyone had this problem?
I picked mine up today .. no shortages in NW uk
I have a female relative and also a friend who get frequent uti’s. They both found they could prevent them if they kept off sugar.

Bicarbonate of soda won’t stop a UTI, it will just neutralises the urine to stop the sting.
I have only one fully functioning kidney and a long history of UTI’s, kidney infections, kidney stones and cystitis!
There is little I don’t know or haven’t tried.
The one big myth is cranberry, leave well alone and take pure D-Mannose instead. .
I had a UTI from hell once and got rid of it by drinking boiled water with bicarbonate of soda in. A nurse gave me this tip years ago. I was dreading going on antibiotics and this averted it.
I have been drinking cranberry juice for nearly 30 years . I had total hysterectomy when I was 38 had 6 UTIs after it and read a report about paraplegics in Sweden and they found it reduced the number of UTIs they got.
5 years ago had to have 16 lots of antibiotics due to mix of UTIs and kidney infections. Saw an urologist and had internal and ultrasound on full and empty bladder and kidneys he said just had bad infection that took long time to go..
A nurse gave me a tip and it does work . Always make sure your knees and hips are in line sitting on the loo sit up straight that way you empty your bladder and bowels completely. And after having a wee wait for a few minutes and a bit more will come . And she was right. I have an ease toilet due to disability so put my feet on a toddler step. Otherwise my feet dangle . Looks like a loo just taller.
Found out dip tests never show I have UTI only blood test . But when I get one like I did last year I just phone my GP tell them my symptoms and because they know me they prescribe either Cefalexin 500mg 3 times a day for 7 days or Nitrofurantoin 100mg twice a day for 7 days . I have to have 7 day course as 5 days doesn't clear it up.
Only 3 antibiotics work on me the 2 above and if they don't work I would have to go into hospital for drip antibiotic. Luckily the tablets work .
So many people actually cut back on their fluid intake when they get UTI's, which is the very worst thing they can do.
It really is important to keep the whole system well flushed through, so anyone who is suffering from any type of UTI should be drinking loads more each day. Preferably, of course, just water - but as long it is not alcoholic, really all fluids with help. Best not too much caffeine.
So many older people get hospitalised for all sorts of conditions, many of which are brought on/exacerbated by not taking in enough fluid. So, before purchasing OTC pills, etc just seriously increase fluid intake.
Re. Cranberry juice, all serious research has shown this is not any good for preventing/treating UTI's.
Gina vaginal preloaded HRT tablet which is the UK's first over-the-counter low-dose estradiol tablet. I can order from Boots (you have to complete an online form). It's been a game changer for me and vastly improved intimacy with my DH.
I also found that vaginal oestrogen and D-mannose helped, though when the mannose ran out , I didn't replace it, and it hasn't made any difference. I also take Jude supplements and have found they have helped too, but it can take 2 to 3 months to see an effect. They aren't cheap, but at less than £1 a day, I think they are worth it. H&B have them 3 for the price of 2, and 22% off if you have the app, which makes them much cheaper. Only drink decaffeinated drinks, too. I haven't had a UTI for about a year now - bliss!
I'm 71 and had UTI symptoms for many years although urine sample results mostly were clear of infections. I had many investigations and hospital appointments. Almost 10 years ago I was finally examined by a gynaecologist who said that I have vaginal atrophy. He prescribed oestrogen pessaries and oestrogen cream and I have had almost no bladder problems since that time. I have had 2 short flare ups during this time which have responded positively to repeating the 2 week loading dose of vaginal oestrogen pessaries. I have also increased my use of the pessaries from twice a week to 3 times a week. I make sure to drink plenty of fluids, mostly avoid alcohol, chillies and strong coffee which can set me off, especially if I forget to drink enough. I have found the Jane Lewis book, 'My Menopausal Vagina' to be very helpful and also the Facebook Vaginal Atrophy Group, which is wonderfully supportive. Hoping that you're soon feeling better.💐💐💐
Rocking back and forth on the loo when you've nearly finished weeing helps to get every drop out. That was the advice the urologist gave to me after years of suffering.
Please make sure your bladder is completely empty after a wee, when you think you've finished have another try, even a small amount of urine in your bladder is a breeding ground for bacteria, my G.P. took me off Hiprex and reduced my Vagirux as I had been taking them for a long time and so far no uti's🤞
Please get this checked out my mum had this for around 6 months nothing cleared it up you need to get a referral to a urologist.
The game changer for me has been cutting out tea and coffee and drinking lots and lots of water in the form of hot water with a little bit of lemon slice. ( Can’t abide plain water!) I thought this would cause endless trips to the loo with that stinging and burning which was almost constant, but quite the reverse. No more pain and no UTIs for several months since I started this. I’m older than by the way!
Thank you everyone. I am going to ask the surgery if I can have Nitrofurantein as a rescue package even though it makes me really nauseous. I have been having Primocillian for all infections and even Trimethoprim until the senior doctor said I couldn’t have it because of my age. Nitrofurantein used to make me feel really unwell so wasn’t given it. I will ask to be given more and my dd also suggested taking Cyclizine to help with the nausea. I ask by triaging and usually someone rings me. I will have completed this course of Privmecilliam on Monday morning. As it reappears within one or two weeks I am worried about the bank holiday weekend. I’m crossing my fingers. I am just about finished the two weeks of vagirux.
I realise I might be in for a backlash here but ivermectin will help- also Dmso. Please research them both
I found the vaginal oestrogen cream made me itch and made me prone UTI's and I changed to Vagifem. No problems since.
Vaginal pessaries we're a game changer for me. Have been taking them for many years and have had almost no UTIs. Certainly not needed any antibiotics. Also feel more comfortable without panty liners if possible. Cotton underwear changed very regulaly
Try applying natural yoghurt, for a week, 3x a day, and see how it goes. Smelly, but effective.
Boric suppositories have been miraculous for me!
Oh dear , I am feeling your pain . Us post menopausal ladies certainly do suffer from this . Keep on with the prescription of vaginal oestrogen , do not get disheartened and stop or you will have to start again with the every day for 2 weeks dose . I also use vagisil every 3 days as this keeps it all comfy down there too . I have a good supply of Nitrofurantoin from my gp ready to take as soon as the symptoms start . Hit it before it takes hold . However since using the vaginal oestrogen the infections have settled down . I also shower instead of bathing and don't use anything to wash down there only water . If I absolutely have to ill use an E45 shower or oilatum cream .
Keep persevering and it will soon become part of your weekly routine. Hooe you're feeling more comfortable soon
Yes! I used to have terrible infections and used to get into a cycle of UTI's followed by Candida caused by the antibiotics. One of the things that helped was being careful with the cleaning agents I used down below, not using plasticky sanitary products and generally being careful not to exacerbate things which would trigger an onset, stress was a particular problem.
My daughter suffers from them as she has a very stretchy bladder and Oxybutinin helped a little. She wasn't allowed to used bubble bath (which helps stuff from the outside get into the urethra). She actually had to go into hospital for supervised urine samples because she had so many, they thought I must be contaminating the tests. It was mortifying at the time but at least they started to act once they realised I was innocent of any crime!
My mother suffered for years and now she is Catheterised. She had tests which showed that she had diverticula in the bladder so would hold on to pockets of urine. The urologist put her on Hiprex which helped a little and also recommended D-Manose.
So many different things including stress can cause UTI's, that it needs thorough investigation which you need to fight for.
