Has anyone had recurring UTIs one after another?

I was in the same situation (endless UTIs) a few years ago. After several lots of antibiotics, my GP prescribed Vagirux pessaries and they have stopped the UTIs - only had 1 in the past 2 years. Use twice a week.

I use blissell gel ...same type of thing ( vaginal estrogen) ...but works better for me .....I also take hiprex daily....I think that was the game changer for me.....a GP can prescribe.....it works as an antiseptic killing any floating bacteria in bladder ....thus greatly reducing the risk of developing utis ....I started getting loads of utis and VA after starting on hormone blocking medication after breadt cancer ....the ANP at the gp practice had been the most knowledgeable in my experience

My brother is on permanent low dose antibiotics for recurrent uti. Not ideal but has given him his life back. Brief trial periods off them cause a return of the problem.

I’ve had the dreaded cystitis feeling twice over the past few days. Yesterday it happened half way through shopping in a supermarket. As soon as I got home I took some d mannose tablets and drank some coconut water ( just happened to have a carton of it and, on reading up on it it said it was very good for urinary problems). Not having had a uti thankfully for many years it brought back horrible memories of the time when I used to suffer on a regular basis.

I have taken d-mannose every day for about three years. Three capsules a day but often four. For the first year I was clear of utis. Then they started again it the last few months they have been relentless. Didn’t know about coconut water.

I too had very frequent utis, constantly taking high dose antibiotics, even having to cancel holidays. I was put on low dose antibiotics which were helpful.but, like LOUISA, the game changer for me was Hiprex. It works as she says and is on the NHS now. I haven’t had one for over a year now.
In addition to the hiprex though, I find it vital to drink a lot of liquid…some coffee or tea but mostly water, aiming for 3 litres a day throughout the day….this was the advice of a women’s health physiotherapist I consulted. Just that extra litre or so of water made a definite difference.
I do hope you can be helped, it’s a miserable, depressing situation to be in.

I’ve taken DMannose too for quite a while, but not convinced by it. I’m 79.

When I was having recurrent UTI's I stopped using public swimming pools, jacuzzis etc.

I have also had recurring utis.
Now I take d-mannose one sachet daily.
Also drink lots of water and tea.
I used to rush when I went for a wee but now I wait till my bladder is completely empty.
I have cut out caffeine.
I use vaginal oestrogen pessaries twice weekly. All this is working so far.

As Gran22boys says cut out caffeine also citrus, raw tomatoes, fizzy drinks, strawberries, pineapple, these are all bladder irritants.

D-Mannose is excellent but not in sachet form as it usually contains cranberry, get the tablets instead.

Cranberry can irritate the bladder.

Be very careful of being prescribed long term antibiotic called Nitrofeurentoin without having regular X-rays to check if lungs are ok. I wasn’t aware of this and not offered the X-rays and I now hsve progressive pulmonary fibrosis which is a terminal condition. I wish I’d put up with the uti problem.

Thanks. I couldn’t decide whether to send away for the waterfall d mannose that I usually have or just buy some from H&B tomorrow which have cranberry in them. The latter did work for me the other day but I’ve never gone anywhere without the former for years. It was someone on here that recommended them years ago and I’ll be forever grateful.

I only checked it out yesterday because I was away from home and just happened to have brought a carton of it with me because it was close to its use by date. I’d read that a mix of coconut water and kiwi fruit gave on a ‘ good clear out’ but didn’t try it as I decided I didn’t near a good clear out after all. Because I’m so fed up of getting up throughout the night I don’t think I’ve been drinking enough. It’s certainly very thirst quenching. I’m going to keep some in stock in future.

67 so sorry that you have had this happen to you. Thank you for the warning.. Do hope you can get some improvement and comfort in your treatment.💐

I was advised by a herbalist to use Pearl Barley. Boil about one cupful of Pearl Barley with twice the amount of water. Strain and then drink the fluid throughout the day. This prevents bacteria sticking to the bladder wall. It’s not unpleasant to drink and very cheap.

I too used to get recurrent cystitis, I have MS and wee a lot! Now been prescribed Hiprex, fingers crossed no cystitis for a few months now! Phew😀

Yes! I used to have terrible infections and used to get into a cycle of UTI's followed by Candida caused by the antibiotics. One of the things that helped was being careful with the cleaning agents I used down below, not using plasticky sanitary products and generally being careful not to exacerbate things which would trigger an onset, stress was a particular problem.
My daughter suffers from them as she has a very stretchy bladder and Oxybutinin helped a little. She wasn't allowed to used bubble bath (which helps stuff from the outside get into the urethra). She actually had to go into hospital for supervised urine samples because she had so many, they thought I must be contaminating the tests. It was mortifying at the time but at least they started to act once they realised I was innocent of any crime!
My mother suffered for years and now she is Catheterised. She had tests which showed that she had diverticula in the bladder so would hold on to pockets of urine. The urologist put her on Hiprex which helped a little and also recommended D-Manose.
So many different things including stress can cause UTI's, that it needs thorough investigation which you need to fight for.

Oh dear , I am feeling your pain . Us post menopausal ladies certainly do suffer from this . Keep on with the prescription of vaginal oestrogen , do not get disheartened and stop or you will have to start again with the every day for 2 weeks dose . I also use vagisil every 3 days as this keeps it all comfy down there too . I have a good supply of Nitrofurantoin from my gp ready to take as soon as the symptoms start . Hit it before it takes hold . However since using the vaginal oestrogen the infections have settled down . I also shower instead of bathing and don't use anything to wash down there only water . If I absolutely have to ill use an E45 shower or oilatum cream .
Keep persevering and it will soon become part of your weekly routine. Hooe you're feeling more comfortable soon
