LPR Maybe ? Reflux severe

Update saw my hep had results from several blood tests all within range he was very pleased. But concerned that I have reflux he’s putting me in for endoscopy 6 week wait, I have no pain at all no burning no more seeing blood that I saw originally in the mucus from throat, as I mentioned I have changed my diet drastically, but I now have a pressure not exactly pain but more of pressure under left rib still palpitations.not anemic at all. Jennycee that was my first thought Barrett’s or hiatal hernia. No doubt will find out but few weeks to wait I’m going to ring up this week and ask if they have any cancellations to consider me

As I understand it you just don't have any pain from heartburn/indigestion but you do have the symptoms of throat clearing and post nasal drip, the throat clearing from when acid comes back up the oesophagus from the stomach. My voice gets hoarse also when at times. Certain foods can trigger the condition, I'm currently trying to find what triggers my throat clearing which sometimes drives me mad at times, but it is very different to a cough.

Could someone please tell me what LPR is?

I have bronchiectasis and so have a permanent cough- but about a year ago my cough was keeping me awake and I wondered if it could be reflux as well?

I had a gastroscopy about four years ago which showed nothing sinister.

Since then the reflux is not like heartburn but more an uncomfortable feeling, described to the nurse as feeling my insides were rotten.

I am now on an Omeprozole trial for six months but the reflux hasn't completely gone.

It isn't a major thing but is unpleasant and uncomfortable at times. I also have a post nasal drip and don't think this helps.

I don't know whether my experience will put your mind at ease HeavenLeigh. I was diagnosed with post nasal drip and gerd some years ago and take no medication. In Jan 25 I was walking my dog and out of the blue I knew I could taste blood in my mouth following a gurgle in my throat. I was terrified and waited a few minutes before checking on a tissue that it was in fact a small blood clot. In my ignorance I thought it was my lungs but felt fine, finished my walk before driving home and going to a&e as it was the weekend. After blood tests and me finding another small bright red clot I was told I had a lot of mucus in my throat, a scab in my nose and that it happens sometimes. 18 months later it happened again, the first 2 off to a&e again and told by different doctors nothing seemed to be wrong and the 3rd time, a weekday my GP surgery referred me to the lung cancer clinic insisting I had coughed up blood which I hadn't so more horror for me, it had appeared without a cough. The clinic sent me for a scan and a chest x ray and could find nothing wrong. It was suggested it could be a result of covid from months before ? I am now waiting for a routine nasal camera referral, about the only thing I haven't had done and no blood for 7 months. Reading your post I'm thinking it could be from LPR as I am constantly throat clearing. I will mention that at my appt. I have found your post very interesting and hope you get to the bottom of it.

Gaviscon Advanced works really well for LPR. My symptoms were sore throat, sore mouth, clearing my throat and a croaky voice.

Omeprazole doesn’t help with silent reflux so it might be that is your problem.

Hi watch the time you have your last meal say finished by 5pm so you have plenty time to digest your last meal. Gaviscon double take if you have heartburn so it neutralises your food and puts a seal on your tummy too…don’t drink or you’ll break the seal.

Heaven, don’t mess about for long. I ended up with Barrat’s Oesophagus, which is a precursor to Oesophageal Cancer.

I had awful reflux for a few years and eventually found out I had a hiatus hernia. Lansoprisol tabs have helped enormously. Don’t know if this will help you but reflux is painful , I hope you get it sorted soon.

My reflux has now been put down to gallstones. Advice was given lose weight, avoid refined carbs like pastry and they will remove my gall bladder. Not a happy bunny.
Omeprazol helped a little but Bisodol tablets work far better during an attack (one chewed and swallowed quickly and another sucked slowly to follow up. I bought Milk of Magnesia on holiday on Portugal when I had a flare up - far better than UK version.

My nasal drip occurs overnight and doc is not at all interested, but my dentist fitted me with a brace that changes my jaw alignment and that really helped

I have LPR and it came on, or made itself known very suddenly when I had a laryngeal spasm which was terribly frightening and caused a week long hospital admission. I had laryngoscopies and a gastroscopy.
They said I had Silent Reflux, in other words, I was having the reflux without any symptoms at all until the laryngeal spasm.
I was put on a high dose of Pantoprazole and Gaviscon Advanced for a few months and gradually managed to reduce the tablets until they could be discontinued. I continue with the Gaviscon Advanced at night as a safety precaution.
A book called Drop the Acid by Dr David Perlmutter ,was extremely helpful in teaching me what was likely causing the problems. There are so many seemingly innocent foods and beverages that can cause reflux.
But learning to avoid certain things not only helped avoid further reflux 'attacks', but I found that my asthma has never troubled me since , and it was severe, to the point of emergency ambulances, so I am mightily happy about that.
This happened to me in 2019 and the one thing that shocked me was that not many health professionals seemed to be very aware of issues around reflux.
I also found that was able to help myself a lot through learning about it via books , and the internet.
The other thing that really surprised me is just how many people suffer with it and don't seem to realise what it is or how to deal with it.

I have LPR, allegedly. But an ENT consultant told me this. I have never had an endoscopy.

I also have a blocked nose, but I think that must be for a different reason.

I am thinking of getting a wedge to sleep on to see if it stops any acid rising to my throat.

I also wondered whether the mucus & fluid in nose would be from the pollen count at the moment - steroids should damp down hayfever symptoms but as another poster said, things change as we age.

Can you cough up the mucus to see if there is blood in it? As just taste can be false. Also did you have a blood test in A&E as palpitations & breathlessness could be anaemia, as you probably realise, having liver disease.

I was suspected of LPR many years ago & had a barium swallow which said it was unlikely the cause of "lump in throat " sensation.

Thanks Nell82 I don’t think so I have excuse the pun a gut feeling it’s connected to my very bad reflux hopefully my wonderful hep will help tomorrow

Could the mucus be caused by heavy postnasal drip from your sinuses? Mine are creating trouble at the moment, not helped by the very high pollen count. I hope your problem is diagnosed soon.

Ppis didn't work for me at all...but famotine worked brilliantly....and far less side effects

Yes I keep a diary of foods etc but because of the amount of meds I’m on for my two rare liver illnesses I think it’s all to do with that and steriods for 17 years with no break

Do you keep a diary of foods eaten, type of weather, pollen exposure? You may find patterns in the notes you keep. As we age things change and you are wise to keep going to your GP for them to run tests and make referrals. I am on H2 blockers and went to a dietician in the end who sorted me out. Feeling a lot better now.
