Horrible bacteria C. Difficile

My poor DH has suffered the last 10 days from C. Difficile bacterial infection of his bowel, to the point where he could have died.

I believe it all started about 6 weeks ago, when he had a course of preventive antibiotics before a prostate biopsy (more on that later). Apparently antibiotics can upset the healthy gut microbiome, leading to good bacteria being depleted, and bad bacteria taking over. He progressively started with diarrhea, getting worse and worse until he was doubled over with pains, and started a fever. We took him up to emergency on the 16th; they couldn't find anything so sent him home. On the 17th, he was in worse shape, so up to emerge we went again. They did get a diagnosis this time.

He ended up in ICU (intensive care unit) for 3 days at a larger hospital 1.5 hours from home. After a scan revealed some concern for his bowel, an emergency operation was done. It was horrible that he had to call his kids and sister to say a possible goodbye. The operation revealed distension and distress of his bowel, but no need to remove it, and no rupture. Thank goodness. I had booked into a hotel, and my younger son came up to spend the night while we waited for him to come out of surgery.

So since then it has been a slow recovery, which make take weeks or even months. We are home now, but his is very fragile, sore and weak, poor man.

So for those with a lower immune system, please always ensure to wash hands after every time you are out in public. This bacteria travels by contact, not airborne. It's a horrible infection and I am so glad my DH is still here with me. We do have a prostate battle ahead of us, but first recover from this.

Thanks for allowing me to vent. Family and friends have been wonderful, but it's been a trying time.

Oh CanadianGran I’m so sorry to hear of all this. Your poor husband and, well, all of you really it’s been a pretty traumatic time for you all. I bet you were all so scared.

Best wishes for his steady and complete recovery.
And reassurance in the long run re the prostate condition too.

So sorry to read about your poor DH’s illness. It sounds horrific and an awful worry for you.
I hope he recovers soon and has the strength to face the next steps.

CanadianGran that sounds like such an awful ordeal for you both and for your family. I hope your DH continues to makes a good recovery now that he’s home. Make sure you also take care of yourself. It’s so easy to ignore your own well-being when you are totally focussed on someone else’s. 💐💐

I am so sorry. My mom dealt with this and it is a terrible thing to recover from. Did they put you on antibiotics for it? In the US, everyone in the house gets a treatment for this.

I am sending healing thoughts for a quick recovery for him.

That sounds horrendous CanadianGran your poor husband and you.
I do hope he recovers well, you’ll be watching like a hawk, advice noted, thanks.

Hi Canadian Gran, from another Canadian. I could have written your story except my husband was not:admitted to hospital. He was lucky as his gp knew what the problem was as soon as symptoms appeared.
Over the course of the infection he lost over 20 pounds. He was prescribed a very expensive antibiotic not covered by our insurance plan. His dr. advised him to eat lots of blue cheese as well as take probiotics. The prostrate was fine, there was no problem. I sincerely hope your husband makes a good recovery, it’s a very nasty thing and I send you lots of sympathy.

So sorry to hear about your DH. Advice heeded.
Hope he gets well soon from this and also hope that the prostate issue is minimal. All the best !

Thank goodness it was spotted in time, CanadianGran. Sending your husband best wishes for a full recovery and also for the treatment to come.

I hope your husband recovers well.

Interesting advice from a poster about eating lots of blue cheese to help the gut.

A friend recently had the same after a knee operation..

It has taken over 6 months for her recovery.

She stuck to a very bland diet as that was the NHS advice but it didn’t work, she eventually saw a nutritionist who told her how to rebuild her gut biome.

I hope your husband recovers quickly.

So sorry to hear this and wishing your OH a good recovery.
Kefir is good for replacing good gut bacteria. Plenty of different things available with kefir in them now. Try to choose ones with lots of different species of bacteria. The Polish ones are very good.
Ginger, mint and peppermint teas are also beneficial.

So sorry about that ❤️💐

So sad for you. Hugs and prayers for complete recovery

During COVID we taught the young how to wash, sneeze into their elbow and how germs were spread. It seems we older folks did not heed - I get so annoyed by throat clearing , sneezing on hands, coughing out at me in public, walking out of public loos without washing at all!

Great timely reminder of the consequences.

Thank you for all the well wishes and advice. I will indeed look into blue cheese (not a favourite of mine!) and kefir. I have started him on yoghurt at lunchtime with fruit, and am reading up on nutritious and easy to digest food.

He doesn't have any weight to spare... at a good weight he is 145 lb at 5'10". I imagine he is much less than that after the past few weeks, but retaining water weight from IV fluids.
Onwards and upwards.

As for cleaning, we are lucky to have 2 bathrooms, so he has one to himself. I have a bleach solution to give it a thorough cleaning daily.

How absolutely awful for you, your DH and your family.

Hope he manages a full and speedy recovery. X

I caught shigella in Morocco and lost over half a stone going down to 7.5 stone. Antibiotics again and my doctor too recommended blue cheese and any fermented food. Think it’s to rebuild the microbiome as the shigella and antibiotics had wiped out both good and bad bacteria. Took six months to gain some weight and get back to full health.
Wishing your poor husband well after his awful time.

So sorry for your DH and for you and the rest of the family. My Mum had this several times. She was on antibiotics for recurrent UTIs. We bought live sauerkraut from the health store which she liked and kefir and yogurt to try and build up the good gut bacteria. To build up Mum we would make bone broth (you can now buy it in most supermarkets) and add lots of veggies and tiny morsels of meat or chicken.

Kambucha to drink is very acceptable and part of your armoury to help him recover.

Hope he is gradually recovering. It does take a time though. My DH had sepsis a couple of winters ago and was very ill indeed. All you can do as spouse is feed him the best diet you can and keep him away from potential infection.

I'm sorry to learn of your husband's suffering. I think the precautions taken during Covid has made us all aware of how bacteria is passed on. We are constantly touching things which have been touched by strangers and we need to be careful not to transfer germs to our mouths. I still use hand sanitiser while out.
It seems that the NHS is so overwhelmed that patients are not getting the care they need.

Poor man Canadian Gran, I hope you are also looking after yourself if what must be a demanding nursing role. I think that a really good and sadly expensive probiotic would be very helpful. I always took them when on a course of antibiotics and now take them all the time as I have gastric issues, and feel so much better.
