I've had my big toe straightened to relieve arthritis. I had to wear a special shoe for about 6 weeks. I can only wear flat shoes but such a relief from the pain, well worth it I think.

I didn’t get any pain in my big toe joint but the toe was moving over, squashing my other toes and causing intractable and very painful corns. I had it and three other toes straightened and fused. I had to hop, using a walking frame, for 6 weeks which was very difficult but it was well worth it. I’d say go for it, it won’t get any easier as you get older.

I have just had a steroid injection and fluid removal from a ganglion cyst on top of my big toe joint. I have severe arthritis in that joint and have had arthrodesis- fusion of bones - recommended. Has anyone on Gransnet had this op and, if so, is it worth all the weeks of inactivity afterwards? Any real benefit? Currently I'm very active, walk a lot and do exercise classes. Discomfort rather than pain. Just worried what would happen in the future if I declined the op. I'm mid 70s.
