Ingrowing toenail surgery

I had the sides of one nail removed a few years ago by my podiatrist. Best thing I ever did done and not half as painful as having an ingrowing toenail treated . Recovery was only a few weeks . Summer is the best time so you can wear sandals .

Yes they were Heinz but my sister went one better she had a pack of Irish sausage land on hers same injury but how do you explain that, frozen solid out of the freezer.
I swear there is a conspiracy by frozen items. They keep an eye out for bare footed poor souls looking for food and you can practically hear them laughing, there’s one here lads, how about a nice chicken this time, ready, steady, go 😜

I was booked for big toe nail removal when lockdown came so I postponed. Since then I see the podiatrist in our village every five or six weeks. She takes the sides off so no ingrowing. It’s a little uncomfortable but I’m avoiding surgery. I know people who had infections or toe nails growing back so further surgery. I know I’m soft

Were they baked beans? Had a bigtoe injury from a falling tin of them, myself, took ages to heal. Think they were Heinz.

I had mine done on Friday by the local district nurse. It was not an enjoyable experience and one I hope I never have to have done again. I can’t walk anyway so it’s not that and the nurse was very caring but it hurt then and it’s hurting now and I have an appointment made with a pod something or other, I can’t remember, as being a diabetic I am in danger of losing my toes and even foot. Now after what I’ve just gone through that was the last thing I wanted to hear so I’ve been in a state and I’m not looking forward to the nurses visit tomorrow. Unfortunately she doesn’t believe me when I’ve explained a tin of beans fell out of the cupboard onto my foot months ago I could walk then but following serious illness it’s a miracle I’m alive now.

I had both sides of both big toenails removed, about 30 years ago. It solved the problem for a while but the toe actually grew back in over the part that hadn't been removed, so it was all a bit pointless. I think they put a chemical at the base of the removed part.

Eventually I figured out that I should let the nails grow long, over the top of the toe, and I haven't had a problem since. Just don't cut the nails short. Having two long nails does look a bit funny, but it solves the problem.

Just to say that I first had partial removal of the toenail down one side which was a waste of time as it grew back, so I had to go through it all again to remove the whole toenail.

I had one foot done several years ago. A bit uncomfortable but we went out for lunch immediately after the procedure. Two weeks later we went on holiday to Croatia. Toe was still bandaged but I was able to get around easily with open toed sandals.I don’t remember not being able to drive apart for the first couple of days.

Do not have them both done together. You will need one foot to hobble around on or you won't be able to walk at all. I've had both done but not at the same time.

You will need special greasy mesh non-stick dressings which will stop the outside dressing from sticking to the wound. Make sure you ask about how to dress the wound and are given enough dressings.

These types of products are generally referred to as tulle gras, petroleum/paraffin gauze, or non-adherent contact layers. They consist of a wide-mesh fabric impregnated with a greasy substance to prevent the dressing from sticking to open wounds, minor burns, or skin grafts.

In the scheme of things, £500 is a reasonable charge by today’s standards.
My operations were conducted by my GP on the NHS.
Procedurally, you are talking about minor surgery.
But please don’t underestimate the recovery. I would be very surprised if you were permitted to drive afterwards.

I had both big toe toenails removed at the same time and the recovery was far from easy. I found the daily changes of the dressings particularly unpleasant and very painful indeed.
It didn’t solve the ingrowing issue.
I went on to have partial root removal and I’ve had no problems since.
Having said all that, it was over 40 years ago and so things will have changed.

Thanks for replying I’m anxious about having both feet done for that reason trying to mobilise could be very difficult even driving.
I’m having doubts about having this treatment done at all as there seems suggestions that the toenails can grow back. This treatment costs £500! I need to reconsider I feel at least get a second opinion

My DH had a bilateral total ablation of hallux under a GA for chronically recurrent, infected, ingrowing toenails.

He had both feet operated on and he had to wear open toed sandals for a while. He had to have dressings changed regularly for a few weeks but I don't remember it all being too terrible as he was able to walk around. Once he had no big toenails there was no possibility of a recurrence.

I hate to disagree with Charleygirl, especially as they have professional experience, but had DH had one done at a time he would have doubled the recovery time.

Can you stop toenails from growing back? As someone else said, don't do both at once. Even with one painful foot it's very hard to get around.

I would never have both feet operated on at once. Although it is minor surgery, it does take weeks to recover. Also getting around the house would be difficult unless you were very lucky.

I need mine doing also. This advice is from my ex professional life.
