shrinking in old age

I saw the nurse for my yearly check up yesterday, blood test, blood pressure and measured my height, she said I'm shorter than I was last year. I used to be 5ft 4 years ago.. last year I was 5ft 1.., now I'm only 5ft. it seems that the older you get the discs in your spine get thinner, so you lose height, pity it doesn't work that way with weight

I'm not sure how much I've shrunk, but I've two rails in my wardrobe (to accomodate all the clothes I haven't got)
I can't reach the top rail, now.

The last time i tried, I fell into the wardrobe and broke both the rails.

I’ve gone from 5ft 6ins to 5ft 5ins

I’ve lost three inches. Now 5ft 1. Wanted a bone density scan but I think they wait till you actually break something before they will do one. Going to go back to the gym to see if that helps.

I hate my reflection in the M&S changing room mirrors. I used to think it was just me until someone on the radio said the same thing. Where Do M&S get their mirrors??

We loose muscle mass as we older. Muscles hold up the skeleton.
You can retain your muscle by exercise and weight training.

Same here I used to be 5’4” but now 5’2” - pity my waist hasn’t shrunk too

Menopauselbitch Tue 07-Jul-26 13:34:59

Pilates is very good at helping prevent this. Wish I’d done it years ago.

I used to be 5 ft. but am now 4 10, That can't be true

I've just tried on an old evening gown, made to measure twenty-three years ago. Good news is that it's a bit loose if anything - bad news is I need to get it shortened, dramatically!

I'm 3 inches shorter than I was at 50.

🤔
If one woman is 55 and is 5ft 7” and her friend is 61 and is 5ft 4”
And they are both married to men who are 70 and 6ft2” tall and they married in the same year 1982 how tall are the two husbands now?

Nobody wants to answer my maths problem? It’s a very easy one if you read all of the thread.😃

I have lost about an inch so far. What I have noticed is my neck isn't as long as it was. I'm all double chin and no neck.

the problem is that it is the spine that shrinks and not one's legs.

I have always had long legs and a short body and now my body has shrunk further, I am beginning to look like a spider, tiny body and long appendages. Worse still I am going back to childhood and needing cushions on my chair is some circumstances to raise my height.

I now buy petite length trousers and still have to take them up. Was 5ft 2 1/2 but now certainly three inches shorter. I hate M&S because they double-rack clothes and there is not any chance of me reaching them. My size always seems to be up in the sky.

In supermarkets it is always the things I want high out of my reach, like free range chicken, dry cured bacon and duck pieces. I asked an assistant why and she said I had expensive tastes, they put the cheaper stuff lower down. She quietly said I might fair better at Waitrose (I was in Aldi!).

I usually scout around for a tall man to help me, most are abliging.

Yes. I was 5 foot 3inches, now I am barely 5 foot..or 1.6m? Smaller than early 20s anyway...It would have been much easier to have been a little bit taller...luggage racks, cupboards, (I could go on) all too high!...;)

Athrawes Fri 03-Jul-26 11:16:00

I'm about 5ft 4in in height - though probably I'm going down to 5ft 3in - and rather round which is a nuisance. I don't think I over eat but there are times when I can't walk very well which is frustrating. The good news is that I'm still alive and I buy dresses that aren't tight fitting but still look OK [in my opinion] so I can't really grumble

Ilovedragonflies Fri 03-Jul-26 09:54:38

Ah! That explains why my long floaty summer skirts now scrape the dust off the floor! I'll have to measure myself...

MaggsMcG Fri 03-Jul-26 08:14:26

I used to be 4' 11 and three quarters for years. I then went to 4'10 now I'm 4' 9 and three quarters. I'm 74 so no idea how short I will get eventually.

Mojack26 Thu 02-Jul-26 23:51:51

Confused???? Your height has remained the same(5') as 4 years ago(5')????

Peaseblossom Thu 02-Jul-26 22:35:21

Greenfinch how do you think I feel I'm only 5 foot 1in! I might be a bit shorter, I haven't been measured for a long time. I will have to get someone to measure me.

Yes, I'm sure we shrink with the years.

And I wonder if the supermarket CEO's are aware that stacking upper shelves high and even higher puts several lines of items out of reach of the likes of moi - 4ft 11ins.

I know someone will say "well ask staff to reach for it for you!", but can you find a suitably tall member of staff when you need one?

And it's not merely a rare occasion - it's fairly regular. How high can these shelves get?

I am 5ft 5.5 down an inch, but the milk and bread I buy is high up and usually very popular, so the remaining are right at the back.
DH is shorter than me, so I just smile at the nearest lady with a tall hubby and ask if I may borrow him. Nobody has ever refused me.

Oh no! I'm only 5ft 1in to start with, and haven't been measured for years, so hope I haven't shrunk! I recently saw my sister-in-law, not seen her for 8 years, at my nephew's daughter's christening a couple of weeks ago, and she told me she was measured and was 4ft 9in! She was the same height as me! She had a kidney transplant over 15 years ago and is now on dialysis three times a week. Don't know if there is a connection.

Luckygirl3 Thu 02-Jul-26 21:08:25

I have lost half an inch .... so far.

And without trying or wishing to I have lost 1.75 stone over the last year - and I was not overweight to start with! So I am vanishing all round ......

watermeadow Thu 02-Jul-26 20:19:07

I have scoliosis so my back is bent over. I don’t know how to record my height as, straightened out, I might still be 5’5.
My grandchildren were intrigued to hear that old people shrink and kept wanting to mark my height on the kitchen door where I marked theirs. I think they expected me to get down to toddler size!
