I had never heard of it.

I am on tablets , one morning one night , to prevent UTI
I was told to take vit C for the same reason
I found slow release vit C , one a day , in Tesco

Hi , I’ve had one uti in a year since starting the daily dose , so I’m ok with it

I’ve tried Cranberry D Manose and all sorts of other things but this seems to work
I use decaffeinated tea and coffee ,, lots of water , and red bush tea for a change

Apparently you are supposed to have an acidic urine for it to work. I wonder about the water and in my case needing Cystopurin quite regularly. Also wondering if 1000 of vitamin C is okay. I think I have damaged my vagina suffering from vaginal atrophy and using an applicator for vagirux. Got a continual feeling of wanting the loo and a tender, buzzing feeling. Having a uti it is difficult what is causing it.

I don’t remember the name but 60 years ago, I was living in the far East and having had constant UTI s for a number of years my GP over there put me on a daily tablet to prevent any infections and it worked so well when I came back to UK I was told there was no such thing and I went back to years of UTI s
I wonder if it’s the same medicine

Very interesting but so frustrating for you. Pity you couldn’t find out if anyone knows what it could have been. It could have been Hiprex!!!

Hiprex has worked brilliantly for me for nearly 2 years, after years of constant utis, They occasionally try to break through but I just up my water intake and so far they haven't succeeded.
You can buy testing strips to check the acidity of your urine, Mine are Siemens Multistix that I probably got from Amazon but there must be others.
I think Hiprex has been around for a long time but only relatively recently prescribed by the NHS.

I am prescribed this by the hospital urogynaecologist who strongly recommends it. I am in the throes of an awful UTI, but I think the hi prix does help. That is interesting about vitamin c

I saw a doctor talking about this on This Morning. Apparently it’s an antiseptic drug that reaches all the cells and keeps them from getting infected.

My mother was prescribed this and we didn't notice a great difference but she had bladder emptying problems which we were told were just too great to manage so she became catheterised. The hospital suggested taking D-mannose as this is also apparently very effective but isn't prescibable by the NHS.

I was prescribed Hiprex after months of cycles of antibiotics (Nitrofurantoin). However, Hiprex didn't work straight away. In desperation, I took D-Mannose as well. Since then, no UTIs now for 2 years while taking the combination.
I was offered further help if Hiprex hadn't worked so don't give up.

Half a teaspoon bicarbonate of soda in warm water on empty stomach qst thing in morning and last thing at night

I was on Hiprex for about 2 years and in that time I hadn't one UTI, at the beginning of this year the pharmacist at my G.P. practice said I'd been on them long enough and not to take any more, luckily I haven't had another attack, I'm touching wood like mad here 😆

Having UTIs for many miserable years, I have been under the care of a Urologist. The last time I saw her, we discussed long term use. I was told that Hiprex had been in use for many years and she had seen no contraindications - as far as she was concerned, I could stay on Hiprex indefinitely.

I still support Hiprex with D-mannose which I buy on line.
I have other health issues and am immunocompromised so I’m vulnerable to infections. I’ve stopped worrying about UTIs (fingers crossed).

Are you on HRT?
Reoccurring UTIs are often down to a lack of estrogen.

Hiprex is wonderful! You do need to take 1000mg of vitamin c to make the bladder acidic . Between the two it creates an environment hostile to infection . I buy the effervescent ones ones but drink using a straw then rinse your mouth out if you value the enamel on your teeth! I used to be prescribed horrible vit C tablets but I am expected to source my own these days . You’ll wish you’d had it sooner. I only take 1 at night despite being prescribed 2 a day. I reckon I drink plenty during the day and keep things flushed.
No side effects whatsoever!

It is indeed an antiseptic .....but it works by turning the urine into formaldehyde which in turn kills any free floating bacteria in bladder

Hiprex has been a life saver for me. I was having uti after uti….. for years!!! Absolute misery! and antibiotics had no effect. Practice nurse prescribed Hiprex and hey presto no more UTIs for well over a year now. I don’t even need to take H daily now, if I feel a slight twinge in my bladder I take one twice a day for a couple of days or so. I’ve never had any side effects when taking them. Hiprex is an anti bacterial so no nasty side effects that you get from antibiotics. I cannot praise Hiprex enough.

Thank you. I am now on a diet of bladder calming food. It’s very bland. I was frightened to take the Hiprex in case it was too much for my bladder. I finished Cephalexin yesterday.

I have started 2 a day.i tested my urine and it looks as if it is about 6. I am taking a 1000mg vitamin c each day. I ate sardines for lunch today to try to raise the acidity. Yesterday I had cranberry juice. I am nervous about the likelihood of kidney stones developing. I can feel a bit of burning when urinating. I took the first one after my breakfast and intend to take the second after my dinner tonight instead of waiting to last thing. I need to take magnesium citrate for another reason so that allows a two or three hour gap which is necessary. Hope I am doing alright.

Someone mentioned sodium bicarbonate. This should not be taken if you have hypertension because of the salt and fluid retention.
