Me too! Diagnosed some years ago from a routine blood test that found very high ferritin.
The surgery actually did nothing about those results so I sent off blood samples to an independent gene testing laboratory which found I had the relevant genes and eventually the surgery got me started on regular blood removal. Ferritin is normal now as I have also altered my diet.
The body absorbs too much iron with haemochromatosis and doesn't excrete the excess which then gets stored in the organs, primarily the liver and can eventually cause diseases like liver cancer. Regular 'blood lettings' get the ferritin down.
I was told to reduce consumption of red meats, not to take vitamin C supplements (vitamin C facilitates the uptake of iron) and not to consume breakfast cereals with added iron...that's most of them!
There are no symptoms until you get one of those diseases.
I think it's important to tell close family members in case they also have it.
I have a set of Irish great-grandparents and I blame them!
People who smell bad on the bus
Will Labour backing rejoining be the “end” or the “making” of them??
