Washable napkins

inspired by the weird traits or ocd thread, where someone posted that they don't like to see used napkins on the table because they look like tissues. That made me think it must be a paper napkin. I use cotton napkins and, surprisingly because I don't iron very much, I iron them after washing. Does anyone else do this?

It was environmentally inspired initially — less waste. Also cheaper so less money waste. Approximately half of them I've acquired at charity shops and they are the lovely old cotton damask type. Many of the others came from an aunt who died two years ago. Nobody else wanted them.

oh I do, also, like linen napkins. I may have a waterproof, wipe-able table cloth on the table for my Grand-daughter but I do like 'real' napkins!

'Oilskin' tablecloth, yes! smile I was using linen and cotton tablecloths but found I was washing and ironing them everyday!!!!! Linen tablecloths are hell to iron. Great aunt in-law who embroidered them (a) lived alone and never had kids, and (b) sent them to be professionally laundered. But cloth napkins are worth the effort.

I too have a wipe clean tablecloth in the kitchen, so easy to clean off the play doh and dry up spills.

Henno....yes I am still happy to use 'proper' cotton or linen napkins....some are nearly 20 years old...(the just us for supper ones) they wash and get ironed (its hardly a chore, as I still have to get it out for the odd shirt or blouse). I love the fact that they are big enough for messy pasta dishes, sometimes double as bibs for babies and are just generally jolly nice to use.

Cloth napkins are like comforters — you can rest your hand on one on your lap and not think Blergh! Can't wait to put this scrap of crumpled paper in the (recycling) bin!

Always use a fabric napkin, would feel naked without one on my lap even when only eating a packet of crisps.
I have a long leisurely bath every morning with a good book and breakfast, and I always spread a face flannel on my chest!

OMG, when I first read this post i though you meant nappies !!!, I nearly puked when I read about leaving them on the table, then I realised my mistake. Phew.

I wondered that before I opened the thread !! Well it could have been an American member.
I do use paper napkins for the GC and for DH's breakfast in bed but have always used cotton/linen (Cath Kidston are my favourites) for meals.
I know I am sad, but I like ironing things like napkins / teatowels etc.
I always use traycloths too. I could never put anything on a tray without a cloth...it just wouldn't feel right.

I don't know anyone who calls nappies napkins. In the UK they are nappies and in N America they are diapers. Down under??
