Having inherited my mums large, heavy cotton velvet curtains I would really like to dye them a different colour. I have tried the dry cleaners - who used to do this - and the local laundry with no luck. Can anybody help please!

Google it , thing of it is , is it worth it as it will probably cost a heck of a lot of money . Depending on fabric will they take on dye ?

not sure - but I have been pricing other fabric to replace this curtain over my front door and it looks like it will cost a FORTUNE so thought I would try and find out about changing the colour!

If they are cotton velvet they will dye beautifully.
Johnsons the Cleaners used to do it I know as my mum used to be a manageress, but I don't know if they still do.

Thanks for that I will find the nearest Johnsons and give them a call.

My mother used to get things dyed, also at the dry cleaners, but the last time I tried I didn't have any luck. The cheapest velvet curtains I've found were at Ikea but they would need thermal linings. The cheapest way to buy these (unless someone knows different) is on-line. Last time I used Amazon. Dunelm Mill isn't bad for price either, but I do know what you mean about the cost of curtains. The ony shops round here are pricey and I don't particularly like what they have in stock.

My mother annually redyed velvet curtains -she had a massive copper boiler and had red hands for a week-no rubber gloves. you could try it yourself in a dustbin in the garden with cold water dyeshmm

What a picture that conjures up, Stansgran! grin
Poor old wormi battling to submerge a heavy velvet curtain in a dustbin of dye solution, and afterwards having to heave it out and hang it on the washing-line, dripping dye-water everywhere...
