Help - Dogs paws

JessM I so agree with you. Visitors to my home have to leave dogs outside, DH is allergic and I can not abide the smell of animals in the house.

Spaniels only smell when wet. They attract dirt so bathe as regularly as humans!

I'd prefer to leave the visitors outside and let the dogs in myself!

I shall now give you the vapours!

My terrier has full use of the house including the bed, sofa etc. as does any visiting dog/animal except my daughter's really ancient dog who is somewhat incontinent and so is confined to one room and the garden with plasic sheeting covering my rather expensive rug.

I have absolutely no muddy marks on any of my bedding, furniture or floors, which before your imagination goes into overdrive is cleaned thoroughly once a week and is all perfectly respectable and presentable.

All animals are welcome here, with love and care. But always expected to behave within the house rules. These include no jumping up to greet guests with great joy, and also leaving guests alone when they are sitting down. No constant barking. Running off with the grandchildrens toys is also not allowed. No using the garden as a toilet, except any really ancient dog. Can't think of what else but hope you get the drift!

Sorry NfkDumpling Although I love dogs (I have 3) I wouldn't tolerate other peoples dogs in my house. I would suggest a crate or indoor kennel for visiting doggies and I would have a polite word with their owners.

I'm with you whitewave. Good behaviour is expected from kids, dogs and adults alike, then we can all relax and enjoy each other's company

Sook my house is too small for cages and anyway caging dogs who're not used to it would only add to the chaos. I think I'd rather have the paw marks and the joy of my family. Lack of space also means dogs and children have to behave - most of the time. There's no room for shinanigans! The only way to sleep everyone is one room for each family including relevant dog. There's no way I'm leaving three dogs who rarely get together alone in one room - any room!

I should perhaps have said that the paw hits have occurred only three times over as many years, the last being three weeks ago. Hence the post, since naturally the hit has been on a different duvet each time and the first stain has only faded a bit.

Have changed my bedding to reflect colour of dog,but any well behaved animal or child or adult is welcome to visit,proviso,no shoes in lounge,dogs may sit on furniture which have throws which are regularly washed,but must give up seats for humans who need to sit,and we don't allow dogs glaring at human who has usurped them in the seat,we don't allow mumping for food...child or animal ,and both have to say please and thank you for a treat,children verbally dogs with a raised paw..all dog poo to cleaned up,same with children and messy toilet habits,towels and wet wipes for dog paws are by the door,wet wipes also for sticky fingers and mouths.....attitude to be left at front door by all who enter,respect by all to all at all times....this how we roll at nelliesxxxxxx

Before we moved from our previous village ,we also had 18 free range chickens,a cockerel who looked like Rod stewart( he was also addicted to a shot of brandy at 4pmevery afternoon,but another story) ,colonel newby who was another cockerel who was dumped on us,4muscovy ducks,and two Indian runner ducks,3 rabbits,and 3 guinea pigs,they all liked to visit ia the back door at different times of the day for titbits or just a chat,hennypenny my hand reared chick liked to lay her egg for me straight into my hand whilst I stroked her on my bed(was a very clean girl no mess),one of the ducks liked to sit in the loo...we had a real live toilet duck ...againno mess..we also used to have various birds brought to us to nurse and when walking over the fields my lovely gentle OH would often find a bird in need of help or TLC so it was always usual to have a menagerie around,I loved it...we live now in a bigger village,although rural not quite as before,we miss our little furry friendsxxx

Sounds like you ran an animal rescue centre nellie. The animals we've had dumped on us over the years include cats, dogs, a tortoise, a shetland pony, hamsters, fish and a Pygmy goat. That was fine when we had a hugs garden with a paddock. Like you we have now moved and only have 2 dogs and seven chokens.

I appreciate that some GNetters are stressed by animals in their houses but they will always be welcome in mine. I keep my house clean and don't allow shoes on in the house. Muddy paws are wiped and I've just ordered one of those dirt catcher rugs. I wonder if the queen has one for her corgis? They are allowed the free run of Buck House I understand.

Hi nanad like you we love our animals ,but we also manage to live in a clean environment,in fact it is my two legged beasties who make more mess we have only 5 chickens now and they have their own enclosure along with the rabbits,would love a goat,and a pony,my lovely OH would be in his element as a zoo keeper.My son before he moved out also had two snakes,and would love a spider monkey...we would love to build an aviary.

Spaniels; don't they just love mud and water! Maybe it's the tiny bits if grass in the mud that cause the stain. I've got several little bottles of stain remover from Morrissons that are for different types of stains, Bought them when I got a blob of mascara on the S.O's curtains a while back . It worked .

I read the article in the DM a couple of weeks ago about the Queen's corgis. It really made me chuckle. Can you imagine anyone else getting away with their pampered pets attacking servants staff? The bit about the footmen needing to be armed with a soda siphon to separate them when they fight and blotting paper to mop up the wees on the carpet is hilarious. I hope somebody goes in afterwards and uses some carpet cleaner otherwise whole place will reek.

That makes me feel better! Actually, today, feeling a bit of a slob with all you lot with clean houses, I spring cleaned the conservatory - which we use as a summer sitting room, ousting the resident spiders out into the rain. I even Traffic Waxed the floor.

Prevention is better than cure we find. Having a mad dog who has two long very muddy walks very day.
When she comes home its straight into the scullery sink. One of the E cloths used as a flannel is great for getting the mud off. For ocaasional use I have a packet of doggy 'baby' wipes. Honestly once it becomes a habit it does not seem much of a chore.

That's the trouble I think. They're not here long enough to become a habit and excited with all the family around. Quite how and when the little beggars manage to get upstairs is a mystery. It only takes the once - or twice. I've now decided to have visiting dog duvets. And keep the unmarked ones for when they're gone.

NflDumpling, must admit we are dont let dog upstairs......elderly cat rules that domain. So we have a doggy gate at the bottom of the stairs, complete with integral catflap!......yes I know tis a bit much but it works for us.

I think its terrible that your family are not more thoughtful-and even let their dogs "walk all over you "
Of course the dogs should not even be coming into the home,with dirty muddy feet-apart from the mess and stains,what about all the germs they are bringing in?
Its very inconsiderate to say the least,of your family....

However, of course you love your family,and it may be,that,they dont come very often-in which case I suspect you are secretly afraid,in case if you make too much "fuss" your family will come even less often-or even not at all...
which is a sad situation....

So,if you cant train the owners into taking more care-what about getting a stairgate! (see if family will help with the cost!)
Then the dogs at least wont be able to get upstairs!

I think the stair gate idea is the best and I will be trying it.

We get our 'dog fix' by having them to stay for a week or so while their relevant family is away. But that's one dog at a time. Perfectly biddable and behaved. The staining has occurred when the house has been family full - and I mean FULL! - after a walk. The dogs are hosed down and paws dried as best as they can be, but there's one young large Toller and two quite young spaniels. Even post trim they still seem to retain water. !

I love and relish the chaos when they all come - it's just this mystery of dog paw stains. Other mud comes out. Football kit don't stain this way. What is it in dogs paws?
