Electric blankets

Never had an electric blanket and know nothing about them but DH was so thrilled with the one on his bed in the holiday cottage we had in September that I thought I would buy him one for his forthcoming birthday. What should I look for? Under or over blanket? Are they safe? What if he spilt his 'cup of tea in bed' while it was switched on?

Any advice or cautionery tales would be much appreciated smile

grin petallus - they are nice on a cold morning as well as when you go to bed.

Update:finally bought an electric blanket after dithering for a few weeks.

Have been using it for two nights and YES!

In fact sitting up in bed with it switched on now.

Can't wait for the really cold weather.

All this sleeping with the blanket on! I so cannot do that. Put it on max half an hour before bedtime, jump into a lovely warm bed, switch off leccy blanket immediately, sleep.

Plus must have a window ajar (even wide open much of the year) for serious fresh air! Luckily this house has lockable metal gates (as in Spain) floor to ceiling across the inside of the French windows in the bedroom. The windows open onto a small balcony and would be a BIG burglary risk if it wasn't for these metal gates. They're curly wrought steel and don't look too bad. Anyway, they're brilliant!

Ok, I don't actually need a hottie. I just like it.

Electric blankets are total bliss. I switch off when I get into bed and the warmth is so relaxing I fall asleep almost immediately. Absolute heaven, wouldn't be without it. Mmmmmmm. Zzzzzzzzzz

I have a single blanket for my double bed. I put the blanket in the bed in the morning, switch it on about an hour before bedtime, then take it out before I get in. I don't sleep so well with an electric blanket in the bed. It spends the night spread out so I don't think it comes to any harm. The only drawback obviously is that I can't switch it on in the night if I feel cold.

I really, really, don't like being cold. My very dry skin actually hurts in the winter, however the thought of sleeping on an electric blanket gives me the heebie jeebies.

I, too, have a Tempur. No need for an electric blanket, it's lovely and warm in winter.

kittylester Tue 06-Nov-12 21:50:15

We've got a tempur too and find that it gets warm really quickly just from body heat.

gracesmum Tue 06-Nov-12 20:35:25

That was the one thing that stopped me changing to a Tempur mattress - and also got me out of a sticky situation with a very pushy salesman. I can't do without my leckie blanket.

NfkDumpling Tue 06-Nov-12 20:32:39

We have a memory foam (Tempur) mattress and were advised not to use an electric blanket with it. i think because they rely partly on body heat for their excellent support. Therefore I've returned to a hottie. It has it's own fleecy cover and stays warm all night.

I'm not quite sure how they managed it but my parents narrowly missed a disaster.
They stored their electric blanket in its box, under the bed, during the summer.
On opening the box to start using the blanket again, they found only ash.
Somehow it had been put in the box still plugged in ( and presumably switched on!).
I avoid them! hmm

Yes. Sheet on top.

jO5 Tue 06-Nov-12 18:48:12

Oh yes Petallus. Didn't notice that. Sorry.

Ana Tue 06-Nov-12 18:44:47

Unless you really want to.....grin

JessM Tue 06-Nov-12 18:42:10

The one I have got has a sort of fleecy layer on top. i can't feel the wires. And I am the bloody princess with the flaming pea when it comes to sleeping. Can manage Ok as long as I have my own blankets, my own pillow and I have not eaten anything too sweet, too spicy, too late, too much or drunk any alcohol or coffee. Or the house is too hot or cold. etc
And just for the record you don't need to take new electric blankets down to the fire station grin grin grin

I bought a new electric blanket last year. Only a single one that fitted under my side of the double bed as OH didn't want any extra warmth. It ended up in the bin as the connection between the blanket and the flex was so bulky that I kept lying on it in the night and it was really uncomfortable so do check that detail petallus. At least with Amazon you can read other peoples reviews. I've now gone back to using the one I've had for years. Our local fire station is doing a free check on electric blankets so I really ought to take mine along.

Many years ago when I shared a flat in London with several girlfriends, I had an electric blanket that "blew up" on me just before I got in to bed - it left a huge hole in the mattress and a nasty burnt smell. Strangely enough I moved out of that flat soon afterwards!

petallus Tue 06-Nov-12 17:56:35

I have recently been thinking of getting an electric blanket (for the first time in my life).

j05 John Lewis are out of the blanket you recommended and out of quite a few others as well so I am about to order one from Amazon.

It's fleecy and fits to the mattress. I'm assuming fitted is best.

Am I right in thinking an ordinary sheet goes on top?

Can somebody reassure me you can't feel the wires?

I'm quite excited at the thought of the cosiness and envisage going to bed very early in the cold weather.

Also it will save me getting into a hot bath to warm up before bedtime.

JessM Tue 06-Nov-12 17:43:06

Wot r u lot LIKE!?
Getting back to e. blankets - they are very very cheap to run!

Ana Tue 06-Nov-12 15:33:14

grin

gracesmum Tue 06-Nov-12 15:31:57

Might have a similar combustible effect!!!grin

Ana Tue 06-Nov-12 15:30:29

Ha, ha - I misread that, gracesmum and thought you were recommending using a 'firelighter'! confused

gracesmum Tue 06-Nov-12 15:28:53

Of course you could try a firefighter.........................grin

Granny23 Tue 06-Nov-12 13:20:12

Wow! Thanks folks - seems that everybody (bar 1 grin) loves their blanket. I shall look for one with a skirt, and measure the matress carefully.
