Lots of insulation - walls, floor, ceiling - will all make a difference. We put electric underfloor heating in our kitchen and my daughter has it too - it is lovely but also VERY expensive whatever they tell you is the estimated cost. You could maybe plan to have large tall radiators on the walls - they do give out great heat.
Maybe you could have a roof window too - friends of ours put one in as the kitchen had a section which was one storey only - makes the area very light. Good luck with your project.

underfloor heating is wonderful, and you can only put it in at the construction stage. If you don't you will regret it! Also, make sure you get the insulation right. My brother bought a house where the double garage had been made into a big living room - looks wonderful but is often perishing even with the heating on.

Our current house had this done before we bought it. I can't answer your question but suggest you do what they did and get underfloor heating to save wall space.

Gangy if you get an architect to draw your plans, they will be au fait with the regulations, as are many good builders. Get a few quotes and they will tell you what has to be done, regulations-wise. We converted a garage years ago, and the height was an issue - it had to be dug down a few more inches. One external wall needed foundations, where the garage door was situated. Siting of the boiler and drains was a bit complicated, but they are used to managing such things. Good luck!

Has anyone had something similar done!! I know that we don't have to get planning permission but do have to sort out building regulations. We're getting little help from the local council's building regulations dept. and don't know where to start - Help please!!! if you possibly can.
