Advice on re-pointing a patio please.

I have some big gaps in the pointing of my patio, probable caused by previous pressure washing (I now have a less aggresive attachment). Can anyone tell me what mix I should use, and with what if any additives? It was originally done with wet mortar, so do I need to do the same or could I pour it in dry and let the rain set it? I have a giant syringe-type thingy, made for the purpose, but are there any pitfalls I need to know about?
I deliberately didn't post this in 'Ask a Grandad', as I have no doubt there are some very handy grans out there too. All tips welcome please!

Is it just the pointing that has gone? What about the ballast underneath the patio? If that has been eroded as well all the slabs are going to start to wobble as will any new pointing you put in. Can you lift a slab or two to see just what is underneath.

In my single life, I would have used a dry mix and hoped for the best. OH uses proper mortar and it does last a lot longer.

Nellie, the slabs are very firmly attached, no wobblers, so think it is just the mortar. The badgers have made the problem worse by dropping peanuts in the gaps and scratching them out! I now have a spot further up the garden for feeding them - it discourages them from digging up the beds and veg. plot.
