Cleaning the cooker

Oh help this is so sad (as in saaaaad). I have a Belling range cooker that is now 6 years old. It came with the house. I have been giving it its annual clean (more than a wipe down). The cooker (not in the cavities - but on the outside) is black shiny metal. Could be enamel. Cleaning seems to have robbed it of shine - yet I only used hot soapy water and resorted to cif/gentle rub with rough side of a sponge where stuff was stuck on. Can anyone tell me what I have done wrong please? And do you have any ideas about restoring/keeping the gloss on this very expensive bit of kitchen kit? Also the glass oven doors are all covered in burnt on stuff - washing does nothing for them. I'd love to know whether anyone has any ideas on how to clean these.

I clean glass doors with ceramic hob cleaner, does the job.
When the oven gets too dirty I have been known to claim it was broken and got a new one blush

I once took out the inside glass from the cooker door to clean and stupidly put it on top of the cooker to dry. Somehow I must have accidentally turned on one of the rings. Walked into the kitchen just as the whole thing shattered into a million pieces. Thankfully both me and the dog were unharmed. It was probably the most stupid thing I've ever done [and I've done some pretty mindless things over the years]. Have never tried to clean an oven door since. Cleaning cookers is bad for your health.

Me too Maggiemay grin I am tempted to throw mine away and buy a new one as in when socks get a hole in them.

Maggiemaybe- please do not be silly, we do not mean you!

What, you're supposed to clean cookers? Well you learn something new every day. thlsmile

Galen Wed 23-Oct-13 22:30:08

This could be new career move for Mr P

Charleygirl Wed 23-Oct-13 22:02:27

Yes, Galen, I would like to be next in the orderly queue after yourself for Mr. P, provided that I can afford the hourly rate (for cleaning).

I get Ovenu in once every couple of years to clean my cooker. They are worth every penny.

Galen Wed 23-Oct-13 21:34:29

Phoenix how much do you charge for Mr P?

Gorki Wed 23-Oct-13 20:59:47

And you don't do any cooking!thlgrin Sorry! You can get back at me on Friday.

Hope all goes well at the hospital tomorrow

My hobs aren't even a year old and DH has I've ruined them already... Think we must have used vinegar or that active spray stuff. Looks like it's rusting thlconfused

My man tells me he's seen much worse but I presume he says that to all the slobs who can't be a***d to dot it themselves.

ninathenana Wed 23-Oct-13 18:00:11

I'd be too ashamed to call in someone to clean my cooker thlblush besides that's DH's job !!

kittylester Wed 23-Oct-13 17:45:52

I use Ovenu which I think is nationwide. My man is very good and personable.

janthea which company do you use? I keep promising myself that I will get someone in but usually end up doing it myself - would love to hand over that job to someone else. I have a Rayburn - do they tackle those?

kittylester Wed 23-Oct-13 16:56:34

Ariadne - how often and at what temperature you wash your teatowels maybe thlgrin

glammanana Wed 23-Oct-13 16:49:08

The cleaning man I use leaves it in a better condition than when I had it delivered new,and for top up cleaning I use Bar keepers friend available in most good supermarkets.I class my cleaning man's visit every 6 mths as a personal present to myself.

My Ds-i-L have people in the clean their ovens; how I would have loved that when marching out of married quarters! I don't do enough serious cooking these days to warrant it!

But, Phoenix, didn't you say that the steam cleaner works wonders on glass doors? I know someone did...

(Am I really talking about cleaning ovens? What next, I wonder!)

kittylester Wed 23-Oct-13 16:37:26

janthea, I had mine done last week - it looks brilliant and it will for about the next month blush

janthea Wed 23-Oct-13 15:52:41

I use a company that comes and cleans the cooker for you. It looks like new when he has finished.

Anne58 Wed 23-Oct-13 15:34:22

I can't remember if I've already mentioned this, apologies if I have! A while ago I went into the kitchen to find Mr P rubbing the front of our stainless steel cooker with a piece of scrunched up tinfoil! shock

Apparently he had read somewhere that a good way to clean stainless steel was to use tin foil, shiny side out and moistened with a little water.

I have to say it worked a treat, he then went on to tackle the toaster, kettle and bin! grin

Bez Wed 23-Oct-13 15:21:59

Mishap grin I am just about to tackle my oven door.
