Rotten potatoes are really in a class of their own, the smell clings to everything. Because I don't like cucumber I tend to forget if I've got one in the fridge. Then DH fancies some and I find myself trying to pick up a bag of gunge!
One of the few things I cooked at school was scones. I obviously got the recipe wrong as they came out of the oven the size of marbles and I shoved them at the back of my desk. When I emptied my desk a couple of terms later I found the bag of fossilised scones. They may still have been edible if you weren't that bothered about your teeth smile

Phoenix That is the most common rotten veg I find in my fridge as well. Usually about a 3inch end rotting inside the polythene.

jessM I fully agree about rotten potatoes as the most revoltingly stinky veg.
I have also been known to put water in an almost empty Marmite jar, pop the lid on and shake it up to soak it clean. If you then forget it and leave it on the window ledge for a few days, that is absolutely disgusting.

I hate cucumber, buy the "half" ones for Mr P. When you reach into the fridge to pick it up, and it's (eeuurgh) squidgy................

Many years ago when visiting my Granny I was offered some Christmas cake. Of course I did ! Silly question !
I was then asked if I wanted this years, last years or the years before !!
Knowing how she liked to "feed" her cakes with brandy I guess they were all well pickled and perfectly edible.

Oooh potatoes when they have gone soggy and smelly. That must be one of the worst [yuk emoticom]

I like your opening paragraph jess , I had a very similar saying when I was going through my divorce: To go back would be like putting yesterday's socks back on

I'll eat most things well past their "use by" date - I rely on my nose and eyes, but yogurt when it's gone fizzy is a step too far and bacon that has gone slimy is a no-no too

Last Christmas I served up a pudding that I thought had been 'improving' for 2 years. Needless to say it had a very mouldy whiff! Fortunately everyone was full and couldn't care less! X

When extricating myself from my first marriage I said to a counsellor that the marriage had become like a mouldy tomato. Once discovered at the back of the fridge, extricated and examined in the light of day, there was no way you would ever put it back in the fridge.
Possibly the worst out-of-date food item I have ever actually tried eating was dumplings made from some seriously out-of-date vegetarian suet. Huge mistake as the fats had gone rancid and the whole meal (nice beef stew) tasted completely foul. And probably the smelliest was potatoes decomposing in a plastic bag in warm weather over the summer holidays.
What ancient foodstuffs have you found lurking at the back of your cupboard? Have you eaten them ?
