Butter dish

Does anyone know where I can get a butter dish that will hold a tub of butter or spread? I did have a lovely white porcelain one but broke it a couple of days ago. Lakeland tell me that they don't do them anymore. I hate the idea of putting a tub of butter out on the table. Thank you.

In fact some of the ones at Amazon look so nice I might have to get one myself. Never had one!

I broke the glass dome of my cheese dish a few days ago. Cheese now still in its resealable packet. Where do others keep their opened cheese ?

I've got a very un-glamorous but very practical polythene cheese dish. It has a raised platform that the cheese sits on so it can be easily cut, and an airtight lid which keeps the cheese from drying out. Had it for what seems like a lifetime.

You don't see cheese dishes so much these days. I remember when DD went to uni we spent most of the summer holiday looking for one for her.

I have just bought a melamine dish from ebay, which holds a tub of spread. Like jingle I am finding Gransnet expensive these days! I didn't know I wanted one until reading this thread. hmm

I put our plastic tub of Lurpak straight onto the table without hiding its identity, at least the everyone knows that it's butter and not margerine grin

I like the idea of a practical cheese dish. I bought a fancy pottery one once and the cheese just sweated in it; it was useless. I currently have opened cheese in poly bags in the fridge but that's not particular attractive or useful!

I tend to put the butter tub directly on the table but for 'guests' I rest it in a 'vintage' dish - without the lid on. I think I'll get a proper one too. Yep GN can be expensive grin

I have got a lovely china Lurpak one with the cartoon trombone player reclining on top, lovely and thick, takes a pat of butter perfectly! It was something I sent for ages ago when they were doing a promotion and it has survived four house moves!smile

I use a round dish originally intended to bake Brie in. The reason why is - it is stone ware and stays cold after being removed from fridge, in the morning. Thus, can be left out without the butter getting warm. X

Do you have a Dunelm near you - I think they have them. I only use butter (apart from Stork for baking) and have two dishes one to be used while the other is in the dishwasher. Am I odd? confused

No kitty I have two butter dishes for my Lurpak too. One is a terracotta hen and one is a small soup dish with a lid hmm

I have a nice little glass dish with an embossed cow on the lid for my butter. A pound block sits in it just right. My eldest DS and DiL liked it so much, they went and got one too for their home.
Good old Wilkinsons, about £3 I think. Certainly not expensive.

kittylester Sat 01-Feb-14 09:28:36

I have one like that grateful but mine only holds 250 grams. I think a pound would go off before we used it!

I store opened cheeses in a plastic box in the fridge, I wrap each cheese block in a peice of kitchen towel, to stop it 'sweating' and it seems to work well.I store eggs in a chinaware chicken in the cool pantry, butter in a dish in there too [in Summer] but left in a dish on the counter top in Winter. Don't have a dish for margarine but you can get them, def. from Scotts of Stow and Amazon.Only have one butter dish, as when butter is all eaten , wash the dish and re-fill it.

I do that with cheeses, too (the kitchen roll) rosesarered - as you say, it stops them sweating and getting smelly!

Some people recommend a foil wrap for cheese...
