Eeeeeurgh. I've found them a few times on the floor tiles in the utility room, but now they are EATING MY CARPET in the sitting room by the patio doors. What do I do, people? They are nasty and wriggly and I really want that carpet.

They're harmless. The only time I see them is at night when I have to get up to go to the loo. They are a very ancient life form and will probably outlast our species.

Pyrethrum powder round the edges of the rooms.

I quite look forward to their midnight visits. They pop out to meet me when I descend to the downstairs loo in the night. No sure if harmful or not to house. Will have to check though due to our lovely new expensive carpet being delivered in a couple of weeks. confused

They seem to like bathrooms don't they?Only ever see them at night, not hordes just one or two, I think everywhere has them. They are a form of beetle I think.Never bothered to get rid of them, they don't seem to do any harm.

Mine also bring their babies out for a mooch round.

If they are eating the carpet (wool?) they maybe carpet bugs. We had those in a very expensive wool carpet in the lounge at our last UK house- it was dreadful. Call a carpet cleaning expert who will know what to do. Bonne chance.

Carpet beetles, I meant. Google them.

JessM Sun 09-Feb-14 20:54:14

Or clothes moths. Sliverfish look like tiny fish don't they. Very ancient kind of animal.

Deedaa Sun 09-Feb-14 20:59:29

I haven't seen any silverfish for some years now. I've always loved them because they are so prehistoric.

Icyalittle Sun 09-Feb-14 21:22:40

Great advice tanith and thatbags, thank you, I shall follow those up. Yes, they are definitely silverfish, eating from the edges inwards, not moths or carpet beetles. granjura I don't think moths would stick to the edges the way these do!
According to Wikipedia, silverfish predators are earwigs, house centipedes, and spiders. I am sending DH out to hunt for earwigs and spiders tomorrow (I don't fancy the centipedes much). He is supposed to be the hunter gatherer of the species, isn't he? I could make him a little net.
Alternatively, deedaa, flowers and roses (what a lovely bouquet) since you like them, please feel free to come and round mine up and take them home with you. The carpet is a good wool one, and it is looking very scraggly at the edges where they have been.

They like bathrooms because they need a humidity of between 75% and 95%. What they like best is wallpaper paste.

Icyalittle Sun 09-Feb-14 22:01:56

They have nibbled the wallpaper by the door too. Sigh.

Nelliemoser Sun 09-Feb-14 22:46:05

My succession of Budgies have nibbled the wall paper at the top of the pelmet but its been nibbled out of their reach now.
