Has anybody had any experience with First Utility as I am considering switching from EDF. They do supply smart meters for electricity so that is a bonus. They are paperless but have agreed, if I switch, to send a meter reader quarterly because I cannot read my meters.

According to moneysupermarket first utility have the worst reviews, and customer complaints.

I'm with First Utility. They used to be pretty bad if anything went wrong and you need to contact them, but the last time I had a problem (which, in all fairness doesn't happen very often) I found it didn't take as long to get in touch as it used to. They say they're training up more staff and I think that's true.
I think they're the cheapest deal around, especially on long term fixed prices..

If you are going to do it, do it quickly. Their prices are going up by 3.6% on 1st April, according to moneysavingexpert.com

Yes, boheminan if I do switch I will be going for the long term fixed price in 2017.

Thanks durhamjen I did not realise that they were putting up their prices so late.

It puts me off switching because I had such a problem with EDF when I switched just over a year ago. Sometimes I think that I should leave well alone but there again, I will be saving more than a fiver a month.

EDF have conveniently forgotten that I need help with meter reading!

I am with Ecotricity, and my bills have just come down. They have rationalised their payment schemes and it is now cheaper.
It is easy to change now, and should be done within a month. I never had any problem changing to Ecotricity, and I have lived in four different houses in the last five years. I have a meter reader every three months, and if I think it is wrong, I just ring them up and they change it.
They have a call centre in England, and answer straight away.
I must admit I did a comparison with Ecotricity and First Utility and Ecotricity was more expensive, but I know that my extra payments go to paying for more wind turbines, which I like. They also do research into new energy forms, wave energy and green gas as well as wind turbines.

Over 1000 people a week are changing to Ecotricity.
I did the comparison on moneysaving expert, and it was quite funny.
I put the gas direct debit in as £120 per year less than I pay the first time. When I changed it to give the right amount, I expected the saving to be £120 less, but in fact it came up as £30 more. Strange.

Charleygirl I am with EDF (see my post about the leccy man comes to call). I now have a smart meter installed. I had problems reading my meter because it was in a high cupboard and set well back so I couldn't see it. I have never had any problems with them.

Where I live the slightest breeze would mean a power cut but each time it went off they would send a text advising how long before it would be back on again. They must have fixed the problem because even in the gale force winds we have had recently my power stayed on.

sunseeker my 2 meters are outside but I cannot read them because I have some visual impairment. How did you manage to persude EDF to fit smart meters, was it because they were moving the meters anyway and are both gas and electricity smart meters now?

Galen Fri 28-Feb-14 15:18:25

I've changed to utility warehouse.

Charleygirl Fri 28-Feb-14 15:19:48

Galen who was your previous supplier?

durhamjen Fri 28-Feb-14 15:27:04

Just compared Ecotricity to utility warehouse. I could save £20 per year.
I'll forgo that as my investment in green fuel.

sunseeker Fri 28-Feb-14 15:45:05

I don't have gas and EDF are gradually installing smart meters - they wrote and asked if I wanted one.

Charleygirl Fri 28-Feb-14 15:52:52

sunseeker that is interesting that they have written to you. I wonder how many a year that they are fitting- I am definitely interested.

Everyone has his/her own choice. I am attached with EDF Energy for more than 30 years. Whenever I face any problem with my electricity meter, calling to EDF Customer service (http://qwikfix.co.uk/edf-contact-number/) always solves the problem . Last month I exchanged my electricity meter with Smart meter and it is working well. But sometimes during wind it leads to power cut. I brought this fact before EDF Customer Service and they noted my complaint. Line man visited our house and fitted the meter in proper manner. Since then I am not facing any problem.
