Summer curtains

Yesterday, down came our heavy winter curtains and up went the summer ones, much lighter, lined voiles. It's a sort of 'right of passage' in our house. Dark nights have gone, light nights and summer is on it's way.

Is it just our family or do others do this too?

I didnt know there were such things as summer/ winter curtains.
When I was a young mum with no money it made smile listening to people talking about their summer and winter clothes. My winter clothes were jumpers over my summer clothes!
Nowadays I really enjoy swapping over my winter and summer clothes, I feel like I have made it in life. However, I am always aware of my mums rule that once the summer clothes go on you cant go back as you will get a chill. Or round the other way. One of her many many odd rules that she still is trotting out to anyone who will listen!
Re the duvets. I am so hot in bed that we have a 4 tog in winter and a 1 tog in summer.
Do I need to get summer and winter curtains?

In truth I detest winter. So this ritual is to me what the summer solstice is to the Druids sunshine

Bags you turned the compost then? grin

Mr Aka is more a winter person Rosesarered inasmuch as he likes to hibernate.

My Mum and her Mum before her always changed from winter to summer curtains,I follow their tradition and do likewise, bedroom as well as living room curtains.

My very dark brown velvet curtains were bequeathed to me by my MIL and a friend altered them to fit our windows. They must be about thirty years old. I clean them every year by putting them in the tumble dryer on the cool setting with three softener sheets. The sheets come out black. The curtains come out like new!

Quite! grin

We I leave the same curtains up year in year out. Quite often in summer we I just don't draw them. Some of our windows have no curtains – no need when you're at the end of a farm track up a hill.

I have washed one of the pairs of curtains in the last eight years. There isn't much need for washing curtains, let alone changing them, with our lovely clean air.

Besides, I've got other things I'd rather be doing than carting ladders around and changing curtains.

Aka Sat 26-Apr-14 14:52:58

And that's the summer cushion covers washed, dried and put on. Job complete.

ginny Sat 26-Apr-14 12:54:39

Just one set here. Don't need to pull them till late in the summer so seems a waste to me.

Lilygran Sat 26-Apr-14 10:05:31

It may seem expensive to have winter and summer curtains but we have had one pair of curtains for over 30 years and most of the others for 10 to 20. And it's useful when they need cleaning to have another set to put up straightaway.

I know what you mean Mishap I thought about changing the curtains in my lounge/diner recently. There's a picture window one end and patio doors the other. After a trip to the shops I decided what I have will do shock shock

I am blown away by the idea that some people have TWO sets of curtains! Affording one lot is bad enough! My DD, who has just moved house, is struggling to afford any at all! I am making them for her and will not charge her the full price of the material - she has no idea how much it costs so I hope to get away with it!

HildaW Fri 25-Apr-14 19:57:36

My dear Grandma had her two sets of curtains.....Bottle green velvet for winter and rose bedecked chintz for summer. She was so proud of those curtains and they were carefully adapted when she moved house......none of that throwing out business for her - a very classy lady.

ninathenana Fri 25-Apr-14 19:32:55

Phew charleygirl
In summer we have just a top sheet. If its really hot n humid I will throw even that off. I also have a fan on all night.

Can't be faffed to change curtains. We do rearrange the lounge furniture so we have better access to the patio doors. Haven't done it yet this year.

goldengirl Fri 25-Apr-14 19:31:31

Crumbs I've never heard this before! I'm afraid once ours are up, up they stay!

Charleygirl Fri 25-Apr-14 18:08:38

yogagran and glammanana I also take a hot water bottle to bed at night! In summer there has to be a heatwave before I part with any of my duvet and even then it is rarely off the entire night. I have always felt the cold and I was permanently frozen being brought up on the east coast of Scotland with no central heating.

It sounds very grand to have Summer and Winter curtains, maybe something I shall have to aspire to[though it's a bit on the late side now.]However, I don't have any really heavy curtains anyway, as we have a lot of blinds as well, so don't really need any more added thickness. What with central heating and cavity wall insulation, it's warm enough. It does sound to be a lot of work, but if the changeover gives pleasure and thoughts of Spring etc. smile
