Non-toxic paint for toy - advice needed :)

I have an old metal rocking horse with a wooden head which my DDs both played with when they were little. I painted it golden yellow then, but it's been stored in the loft for years and when I got it down for our little granddaughter, I realised it needs repainting (but I'm going to paint it in different colours!)
What I don't know is what paint to use. Ordinary gloss is terribly expensive even at places like Homebase. I won't need anything like 500mls either, even with two coats - probably half that amount. And I don't know which paint is suitable to paint children's toys. Does anyone know which paint I could safely use and the likely cost? Any advice?

Rowantree I use a product called Plastikote enamel paint which is perfectly safe for children's metal toys as it is lead free and non toxic. Also a good range of colours available. I buy it in B & Q. HTH

Your welcome. Also meant to mention, it comes in aerosol sprays which I have used successfully. Done outside on a calm day. Happy painting. I'm sure your granddaughter will love it. I still have our two DD's rocking horse and our two GD's use it often
