New bed

We have a huge king-sized bed that we both love - lots of space to sprawl out. And it is like a little world of its own - we can sit with a cup of tea, books and things all spread in front of us.

We have a memory foam mattress on the top and I find that very comfortable.

We have a spring mattress topped with a Tempura one; the bed is therefore quite high, but that is great given my knee and hip operations, (knee done, hip to come) and the pain before (more than the pain after!)

I cannot imagine how I would have coped without the memory foam. It was all very expensive, especially with the bedstead I chose, but worth every penny.

Lots to think about. DH has a down on memory foam, it makes him too hot. We did try some lovely ones in John Lewis but the price was eye watering. Still as DH pointed out, it will probably be the last mattress we buy - cheerful or what!

Prior to buying my present bed, I had a memory foam mattress topper to see if I liked the feel of it. I did, so when I needed a new bed I bought one with a memory foam mattress and I put the topper on top because this mattress was not as thick as my previous one.

I do take a hot water bottle to bed at night but I only need it for a few minutes. I find during the night I waken up too hot. It does retain heat better than an ordinary mattress. I have a bit of a struggle getting out of bed but that moment makes up for a comfortable night's sleep. I have no idea of the make, I do know that it is not Tempur.

There is no need to turn it so that for me is a bonus as I could not manage it.

We've just come back from France where we had a really comfortable king-size bed. It was actually two singles fastened together but was so spacious that my restless tossing and turning (due to aching joints) didn't disturb my DH. I shall definitely go for this option when we get another bed. The mattresses were firm sprung ones which we prefer.

try Ikea, you can try out the beds, and they offer a replacement service so that when you start using the bed and you are not happy with it, they will change it or refund.

I have a firm Slumberdown mattress with a built-in memory foam top.
My husband had back problems, having fallen off a ladder and fractured his spine. He never had any problems with the mattress. It was the most comfortable we had ever had for him.

Evening all, thanks very much for your thoughts and advice. I think I am going to have to go back to the shop(s) and do some more lying down. It feels a bit odd lying down in front of the salesman and very difficult to decide on an expensive item after only a few minutes ...

Our present bed has a feather bed topper. It's lovely when first shaken up and flat. After a couple of nights it develops a ridge down the middle and it's like sleeping either side of the great divide. I would love a tempur topper instead. Do you think a topper will be as good as a bed with the topper incorprated in the bed. I also would like a new buckwheat pillow but have only seen them for sale online. Does anyone know if you can buy them on the highstreet?

I haven't a clue which brand my mattress is but I do have a Dreams Memory Foam mattress on top of it, absolutely bliss. It is about 3 inches deep, covered with a beautifully soft washable cover, and cost me £160.00 for a double size. I bought two, one for my son too. He sleeps so much better now with it on and my back ache has all but gone. I used to not be able to move when I got out of bed before.

If I were you I would buy a memory foam mattress or a topper for a realistically priced normal mattress. Try them out and see. You will not be disappointed. I can't sing the praises of mine enough.

I bought them after compensation from an accident. I did see a gorgeous diamond necklace but decided that my health was more important and bought an electric settee and our mattresses.

Love love love my Tempur mattress, I also have one of the shaped pillows which I put under my back to keep me propped up.

We've got a Tempur bed - but only the basic one, which feels quite firm. Neither of us liked the extra soft one - far too squidgey. We've had it 12 years and there's no sign of deterioration and the base and drawers very well made. It's great if you have a partner who is restless in his sleep as - 1) being so supported by the mattress he doesn't turn over so much, and 2) having no springs one person can throw themselves around without disturbing the other (unless they want to be disturbed ).
We got it because we both have back problems and it has helped.

The main disadvantage is that I had to relinquish my electric blanket - it relies on body heat to 'mould' to your body shape, but it's warmer than a conventional mattress. We sleep under just a sheet in summer.

I have heard that if you need to lever yourself out of bed in the morning don't get a deep Tempur mattress as your hand just sinks further down into the bed and you are left with nothing firm to push against.
