Anyone know the best way to get rid of ancient cigarette smoke smells in velvet curtains?
I found a pair of long velvet curtains in a bag when clearing out a relative's house after she died. Paid a fortune to have them dry-cleaned because they smelt so awful. It has made no difference and the shop told me that dry cleaning won't stop things smelling. I am at a loss as to what dry cleaning actually does - surely cleaning something would remove the bad smell?
Anyway, they recommended I removed the old lining, which I have, but they still smell - My daughter pointed out it was the smell of stale cigarette smoke, which has lasted about thirty years as the previous owner of the curtains had given up smoking ages ago!
I am tempted to bung the curtains in the washing machine but thought I would ask for tips on here first.
How should a family manage an estranged relationship?
