We have a new gas hob and the gas rings are a grey non stick stuff but have some baked on food which have proved impossible to clean. I have tried so far - vinegar and baking soda;hot water; Cillit Bang; very light abrasive pad;my fingernails - all to no avail. Any other ideas?

Lakeland's 'Wash-up-wizz' scourer, removes baked-on food without damaging the hob. At first sight it looks expensive but lasts forever and can be washed in the dishwasher or washing machine. I wouldn't be without mine. You could also try Barkeeper's Friend along with the Wizz.

If they come off, try an overnight soak in solution of hot water and biological washing powder.
